Resale value?

Well, it looks like I'll be listing the Scorpio on eBay next week, before I commit to it I'm wondering what I can expect it to sell for. There's a description and some photos over on the 'for sale' thread here, what do you chaps think my chances are on the Bay? I'm starting to think twice about letting it go now I've seen the recent values, I still have it taxed and insured along with the Jag but I know if I keep it it'll sit there unused for months on end, something big will seize and then it'll be game over. I was originally hoping for around £1500 to £2000, this seems way higher than reality though. The body is excellent (as the photos show) except for some bubbles of rust starting to appear on both rear arches, a scrape or two on the bumpers and some of the lacquer starting to pit on the bonnet (work I was planning for next summer). Would it be worth my time and money trying to get the car into a near mint cosmetic condition or should I sell as-is? Thanks in advance Regards, Bruce.

The prices seem to have crashed (again), I would think you'd be looking around the £1000 mark on ebay for a good one going by recent prices (just watched a facelift 24v go for £1021)

Yeah £1000 on a good day if your lucky. A car with no MOT similar spec model sold for £96 And a clean Estate 24V with full mot and a water leak somwhere £400. Only MINT cars are still fetching top money and that means no rust at all. TT

Nevermind I saw all this happen with the Capri a few years back, even the reliable old N reg Mondy 1.8 with a genuine 25k on the clock is worth less than my insurance premium now. As much as I'm in love with the XJ I'm starting to miss a few things now, went to pick some stuff up today a few miles away, take the Jag for a run I thought... ...Had to carry most of it home on the back seat because the boot isn't tall enough and the rear seats don't fold Good things about the Jag is that it's doing better than the 2.3 on fuel (yes, no lies here ) and the growling 4 litre is loooovely but it reminds me how good the Scorp really is for the money. The main killer is having them all insured, if it wasn't for that I'd seriously be keeping it a while longer Regards, Bruce.

Why are these Scorpio's so thirsty? My friend has a big Jag and he belts down the M1 and returns 30MPG. My 2.9 12V if I tickle the throtle and watch the speed I get 27 MPG max. Usually I am doing 22MPG or less. Still I love it to bits.

I average 25mpg with the 24v and that's thrashing it fairly hard. I can get 33-35 on a motorway run taking it easy. I think you've either got a leak, a VERY heavy foot or an engine problem

I have no idea either mate When I went to collect the Jag the owner said his father knew a thing or two about Granadas and said the 4.0 would give me better MPG than either the 3.2 XJ or my Scorpio 2.3. Oh yeah I thought... Last Wednesday I put 3/4 tank (£40) of V-Max in, have done over 200 miles now, part urban and part A road along with a few cold starts and trips to the local post office, I still have 1/4 tank left...the Scorpio is on the red now and I've only done 150 since I filled it the other week. I worked it out and if I'm careful (very careful ), I can manage 25-28mpg in the Scorp on long runs, this drops to 20-22 urban. In the Jag I'm getting around 24-26 , I'm not a hard driver but I admit I've opened the cat up a few times in sport mode... My Series III 5.3 was very thirsty but the Jag V12 was known for that, even then I used to manage 18mpg on a run, dropping to 12-15 in town. Regards, Bruce.

| Have heard the 24V is more economical than 12V . Newer design of engine. My Old pre Frog eye 2.9 12v Scorpio would do 35 MPG quite easily. They recon it is the Cat converter takes the MPG and power down.

| I must have a heavy right foot then, cos I don't average anywhere near that Best I ever got on a motorway run was an average 33.3 but that was with the cruise set at an indicated 77mph and driving almost comletely with those buttons (very steady). That run was about 120 miles. 'Normal' driving around town and A-roads gives me an average of about 19-21mpg By the way, best of luck with the sale Bruce. I think your car looks great. Shame the bottom's fallen out of the market, again!

I'm with Paul on that one however I can't ever remember doing just 77 on the motorway.....particularly in France!! My MPG around town is about 17-18 but I do take on every Chav and BMW I can find at traffic lights (after turning the LPG off - did I mention the LPG??) On LPG it is about the same MPG but it only costs 40p a litre so technically double the MPG Baz

Thanks Paul, I'm still in two minds myself, don't go there mate The fuel economy isn't a big problem to me, all I was saying when I sparked all this off was that the Jag does as well if not better, the Scorpio is a heavy ol' motor and a bit of luxury will always cost in one way or another. The 4.0 spends most of its life below 2500rpm; even if I give it some welly it changes up at 2600-2800rpm, if I pushed it up to 4-5000rpm the MPG would most likely go down into the teens so I'm not complaining either way. The Scorpio is a very refined ride and if fuel economy is the cost then fair enough. I've always found that cold starts are the thing which drain the tank on the Scorp, on a long motorway run it returns mid 20's but use it on local roads for a few days in the winter and the tank will drain quickly. I've heard more than once that the Cosworth is better than either 16v on petrol because of the extra power, mabye this is true. Out of the Mondeo I can get around 28-30 even if I push it, in normal driving I can get 32-35 but it's a manual and I never drive it hard anyway, the Scorpio is thirsty for a mid 2 litre but I've known far worse cars, it does better than the Capri ever could. Regards, Bruce

Had the Scorpio for sale 3 weeks today, advertised on here and in the local paper, not a sausage Was going to list it on eBay tonight but looking at the prices it doesn't look like I can expect more than £2-300 at the moment. I'm seriously thinking about hanging onto it until the spring, claiming the tax/insurance back if money gets tight but then I know it'll seize up and sit in the murky depths forever as the Capri has done for the past 10 and a half years. Any advice? Anyone reckon eBay will pick up after new year or am I flogging a dead horse asking £8-1200 for it? I love the Jag to bits but...the Scorpio is proving more practical like it isn't so likely to get scraped in car parks (i.e. much smaller) and the back seats fold (very handy I am now finding). It's having them both insured which is the killer, it costs me £800 even as second car. It's not perfect (well, I would say that ) but I've had a lot done to it and if it comes to letting it go for peanuts I'm in two minds. Come on chaps, I need some advice/moral support here

Difficult mate. I personally would not do anything until after Christmas, you won't get anything like its value until then. Why not sell the Mondeo and use the Scorpio in its place Or try this: take the Jag and the Scorp on the same run one after the other, some fast roads, country roads etc and see which you prefer, gut feeling at that moment like

I'm thinking you're both right, apart from that I really don't want to see it go now it comes to it Dave, there's no comparison between the Jag and the Scorp on drive, you know that full well mate . The Jag could leave it standing speedwise with ease, seems more than 150 vs. 250 bhp difference, the Jag flies with no trouble at all and the growl from the 4 litre is magic. But, power isn't everything and the Scorpio comes a good second best, even after 2 years. Selling the Mondy would be ideal....but, it isn't really my car to sell. When I was 17 my uncle said I needed to learn how to drive, paid for my lessons and everything (I owe a lot to him ). The Mondeo was his car from new (hence the condition+mileage), now it belongs to my aunt who doesn't use it much,we're a close family and I get to use it as an everyday runner as long as I take care of it, she keeps it maintained etc etc. So, I am a very lucky person but our mutual understanding is that it stays . The Jag is part lust and part investment (get my reasoning/excuse here? ), I can't really afford it but then again there are other things I can't really afford and I still manage . If it wasn't for the insurance I'd be keeping it and getting it mint next year, getting the rear arches done (only starting to bubble, not bad) and a few other things...I'll see how it goes. Regards, Bruce .

Sold my Mondeo 3 weeks ago on Ebay, 2.5V6 N reg 1996 with 100,000 bodywork was A1 i'd put loads of stuff on it like: Scorpio interior map lights, electric sunroof, superchip, full mongoose twin exit exhaust etc gorgeous car, however had slight ticking(Head gasket going to go eventually). Got £400! At the end of the day it was a 10 year old Mondeo with 100,000 miles so got what the "market" thought it was worth. Keep your low miler Mondeo it will be cheap to run/insure wont let you down(As long as it aint the 2.5 V6) and wont get nicked. Just run it till something major happens then scrap it. That's my two pence worth anyway. Guy.

The Mondeo is an October 1995 (N reg) 1.8 manual 'Verona', a cross between an LX and GLX, has the electric mirrors and a few other gizmos but without the GLX computer, map lights etc... Nowhere near a top end one but very reliable, good on juice and just coming upto 26k on the clock (only had 8.5k on the clock when I started driving it). Market price below £300 now I guess, still have the receipt for £12,000 from Dagenham Motors when my uncle bought it in September 1996 (was used as a promo car for the year). I appreciate all the advice, mabye the Scorpio lives to fight another day, all depends how quick my trusty HP printer can print bank notes Regards, Bruce.
