hi all, well the time has come for my beloved scorpio to go to the great scrap yard in the sky...

what id like to know is this..
ive just bought a new scorp, how do i transfer my private plate from my old one to my new one? will the scrap yard take the old one with no number plate or does dvla give the old reg back to the car?

i havent a clue how this works, tried getting in touch with dvla but i cant seem to get hold of a person to talk to... all automated.. and no options for my problem.. im sure some out there must have done this?

many thanks in advance

Kev, I believe from when I was buying a car with private plates the seller applies to DVLA for the original (reserved) plates to be changed over; took about 14 days in my case, plate was worth £3k alone Shocked

Regarding scrapping a car, I'd imagine the best way would be to register the car as scrapped on the V5 and get your own plate back, then there's no chance of the scrapper putting it back on the road, someone else may be able to help more though.

Regards, Bruce.

EDIT: Look here mate, does this help? Seems to me that if you're sending it to a registered scrapper you fill in the same part of the form as you would to sell it and do the plate changeover the same too.

have changed plates a few times, and always found it best to go to a DVLA local office, all the paperwork is taken care of there and then, you will need both sets of papers, for both cars (tax discs, mot's etc.etc),or you can put the plate on a retention certificate (£105.00)....
pretty uncomplicated really, and you can ask that the car the plate is coming off of,has the original plate put back on....
1 thing to remember though, all the paperwork can take up to 3 weeks, and you can not sell the car the plate has come off until you get the new logbook back
