Interior Mirror - Early Warning Signs?
« on: Dec 11th, 2006, 7:13pm »

Now we all know that these fancy dimming rear view mirrors can fail in an instant. And those who have had one fail will know how much of a mess they make.

Luckily, mine's always worked just fine. But I'm not sure now if its got the start of something wrong  Undecided

The only early warning sign I knew of was if dark blotches appeared.
But yesterday I had mine on 'DIM'.
When driving it today, things looked too dark, so I pressed the button to turn it off... only the mirror has stayed tinted.

Could this mean its on the way out?

Opinions please   Smiley

It's dead. Get it out ASAP before the  "alien blood" destroys your interior!!  Shocked

Make NO mistake, that stuff is highly nasty to anything that it falls on!  Wink

paul...
i agree with SD here, classic early signs i'm afraid, advice has already been given, whip it out pronto,as you already know, when they go,they leave a mess, and they tend to give very little warning as well...

Don't  delay Paul. Get the thing off and out of the car. Disconnect inside the interior light fitting and remove the mirror by a sharp downward tug in line with the slope of the screen. You can retain the original mirror without the 'auto dip' facility by following the 'Snoopy' method. Here.

Hey

ive never had a mirror fail and dont know much about them, but if the whole thing has stayed dark, could it just mean the switch has failed or ceased up?

paul B, is the green led indicator still on? and when the car is turned off, does the mirror go normal?

I may be talking rubbish though Tongue

Tried it out again tonight.

The switch goes in & out lovely, and the green light comes on as it should.

But whether its on or off, I now have that grey tinted effect all the time.

My mirror has been permantely tinted since I bought the car, & about 4 months ago the liquid suddenly dropped, but hasn't leaked yet.

When going around corners it is quite calming to watch the liquid sway from side to side.......a bit like the sea  Cool

Thinking of injecting a nice bright blue dye into it & a bit of sand  Grin

Or maybe I'll just whip it off sharpish  Wink

So, shall I take it off then?  Undecided  Wink

Got something laying over the console until I can find time to take the mirror off properly.
