Facelift or not ?

Hi all - I'm a new member. My Mk 3 Cossie died so I bought a Scorpio Ultima Cossie with 54k on it. Date of first Reg 24/09/97. 'R' Reg Now, having looked at the facelift details on this site I'm confused. It has the new style Radiator Grille. It has the Headlamp adjuster. It has the little spoiler on the boot. But it doesn't have the Brake cooling ducts on the front bumper and it hasn't got black headlights. So what have I got ? Is it pre facelift model, or is it a halfway facelifted Scorp ? I'd be interested to know if anyone can explain ? Thanks Tony

hi there might just have got a new grille at sometime. or might have had a bump at the front and the previous owner just put pre-facelift part back on as they're easier to comeby. hth btw, 1 of the easiest ways to tell is if it have 3 full seatbelts in the rear.

Tony, there was no facelift boot. All boots were the same from the first 1994 models. Baz

My 97 2.3 came to me as a pre face lift & has 3 belts! there does seem to be some late 97s with faceliftgrille & headlights about too but with no facelift front bumper/light washers or rear lights some may be as from ford but like mine now have been changed as a personal tast ,the head light adjuster was only fitted to models without the self leveling suspension

Is your third belt a lap belt or the full over shoulder belt? Do you have three headrests on the rear seat?

Hi Middle belt is lap only and no centre headrest... I don't remember seeing a Scorpio with the boot having the slight spoiler before Anyway, I'm very pleased with it. As I said on the GS-Online site, my old mk 3 Cossie used to drive more like an out and out racing car, the Scorpio Cossie does it more smoothly but still has all the Cossie power and is a delight to drive. Haven't tried throwing round roundabouts or corners yet ! Thanks to all for your comments Best Regards Tony

Tony, a lot of confusion over this issue, the best way is to post a couple of photos and the chassis number and let the experts in the facelifting dept. here make a decision A lot of people upgrade parts of the earlier cars to facelift spec, grilles and headlamp lenses being the favourite followed by the rear lamps it seems... Regards, Bruce.

My mates got an S reg 2.3 Ghia estate. It has the dipping headlamps....but that's about it.....the rest is a pre-facelift. But for some reason, he's got really soft black leather seats, almost like PVC, where as my facelift black leather seats seem to be a much thicker leather

JC, some of the weird anomolies with the production runs I guess!! The prefacelift leather was much softer than the facelift one but not as hard wearing. Facelift cars had redesigned front bumper, darkened lights, centre rear headrest, inertia middle belt and some had side airbags. Unfortunately when they added the above gadgets, they took away: passenger illuminated vanity mirror, door and kerb lights, coolant level indicator and a couple of other bits too! Baz

I don 't know if this is of any interest to anyone but i work for Ford in the componant test lab and theres a few 'old boys' knocking around who i do jobs with sometimes. On the topic of cars I told them i had a couple of scorpio's, and i got a rundown of the componants they tested and one of the things they said was it turns out that the facelift version of the scorpio was the design first proposed but was rejected for the pre-facelift design when it first came out. Weird eh Matt

Its strange, my 1997 TDi ultima estate has the prefacelift lights, bumper and grill, but has lost the pre facelift puddle lights and the pass mirror vanity light, but only has the lap belt for the centre seat. Great the spawn of satan then! Paul

Hi all I've checked some more.... Mine's lost the light on the passenger vanity mirror and and there's no bulbs or holders in the doors for the red warning light and no puddle light either. Seems a right old mish mash......must have been made on a friday ! Best Regards Tony
