Suspension springs compatability

Well, the MOT man has just informed me that i have a broken front spring, and issued an advisory on the other one. This is on my 95 Cossie saloon. I am about to start breaking a 97 2.3 Ultima saloon, so my question is this? Are the springs all the same size and rating? IE will the springs from the 2.3 fit my Cossie? Oooooh i can hear the brain cogs grinding from here. LOL Cheers Ian

Different ratings for the 2.3 and the 24v the 24v is the same spec as the diesel though

how can an advisory note be issued to the other side, it either passes or fails, there is no grey area on springs, the only reason for failure is a breakage.

| Perhaps they can issue an advisory if the breakage of that second spring looked likely, as in very rusty or fractures appearing?

I wondered on the advisory too. Must go back and ask them. Wickedteen has offered me a pair of shocks complete with 6 month old springs so looks like i had better accept. Cheers guys Ian

could the advisory be because you're meant to change both springs even if only one has failed?

That is exactly right Taliban. I poped down today and asked them. The theory is that if one of them has gone, then the other is likely to go soon. Cheers ian

What a Bl...y disaster this is turning out to be. The pinch bolt that holds the bottom of the front shock onto the hub has snapped off, so still cant remove the shock. Looks like i have to remove the hub and do some drilling and grinding. I removed the caliper and noticed by the wear on the pads like i only have 260mm disks fitted. (Should be 278mm on a Cossie). AND to cap it all, the caliper cradle bolts heads are midway between 14mm and 15mm so neither socket will undo them. And i thought this was only going to be a 2 hour job!!!!!!

9/16 for your spanner I've snapped two of those pinch bolts before, even heating them first doesnt seem to help. I'm breaking a 24v just now if you need a hub

I guess i may need a hub, if i fail to drill it out. Trouble is, i can't shift the nut to release the lower pinch bolt to remove the hub either. Its an 18mm nut on a torx head bolt and my socket it just trying to round off the nut. Its not like its a cheap socket set either. This all makes me NOT want to attempt the other side at all, so may just keep the other shock until its needed. What do you want for the hub (N/S)? and any chance that you have a VSS and maybe a good pair of front disks? Cheers Ian

OK, so drilling the bolt out failed. In fact, i managed to drill down the thread so its no definately no go. I ground off the bottom nut so that i could remove the hub. I do of course have all this fitted on the 2.3 i am breaking and while i know that the shock/spring, disc and caliper carrier are different, the hub should be the same. Trouble is, getting it off without a repeat of all the same problems. I may just be easier to pick up another hub and the bolts/nuts that i have had to grind off. It would be nice if someone in the W Midlands had these so that i could just possibly get the job finished this weekend. Ian

Cheers mate. I am now going for the 2.3 hub in the morning, Just for speed really, cos i really need the car back on the road tomorrow. I may just remove the shock and hub as one lump and just change the spring, so as not to risk breaking anything, and then source the parts i need to get everything as it should be and swap them over when i know its going to work OK. PM me the price of the hub and fixings and if you have the disks, and then i can work out where to go from here once the car is back on the road. Cheers Ian

OK well that went better. Got the whole shock and hub off the 2.3. swapped the spring and fitted it right on and only took 1 hr 45 mins. Still running the 260mm disks for now till i get the right ones. Changed the alternator too so off for a test drive Ian

Well, i have just done a 65 mile round trip to Cannock and the car seems to handle better now. (less wallow and more stable in the wind) so i think i cracked it for now. AND NO BATTERY LIGHT so the alternator is fine. Phew!!! re-MOT this week Ian
