EEC IV (OBD1) Reader & Cable.

Time that I got to grips with Code Reading on my 2.9 12v.

Now I understand that I can't use OBD2 (more's the pity), because the 12v doesn't allow it.

The problem is that I can't find any kind of cable or 'READER' to actually display whatever EEC-IV codes I find.

Does anybody know if such an animal exists, and if so, where can I get hold of one please. Or is there an OBD reader that is 'downward compatible' these days?

Obviously not being able to 'see' the codes will be a major hurdle. And what software would I need?

Thanks for any help.  Wink

Something like this?

I believe a member on here has bought something suitable from Halfords in the past for quite a good price, might be worth a look there  Smiley

Dave, I've seen these, but I see that they are the old (under bonnet) diagnostic 3 pin plug fitting. Don't know if I could re-wire it........If you have a look at the actual packaging you can see the plug.
I'll keep hoping.

Snoopy thanks, I'm trying to get this sorted. It will save me a lot of hassle.

I'm going to Munich in March, and intend to go to Conrad Electronics, as they are pretty hot on this sort of thing, and may just have what I want!!

Just looked up their test gear on their website, and at least I can get an OBD2 blank plug to wire up, so that's a start.  Smiley

SK PANG Electronics sell the blanks on the tinternet HERE( very good service)  really easy to build yourself but I understand the reader Halfords sell does work but never tried one my self.
Had a look at the item on Ebay and the plug shape does NOT look right it looks more like the earlier US FORD and GM ones and they are very very different and it is also EXPENSIVE.

Speak to Harry MT he seems very good with the electronics side of things on his 12v.

If you just want something basic, then the Star does everything providing you don't mind counting the bleeps/flashes and looking up the code from a printed table. This seems to be what you have to do with the Draper one.

Much better is the unit using whats known as a 'pic' to guides you through the diagnostics via an LCD display. This also diagnoses the ABS problems. It is quite cheap, but it needs to be assembled (soldered together).

I suggested a group buy on one of these a while back with perhaps Geoff W, who seemed to at the time to be interested, but it didn't progress further. I'm still up for this as a group buy.

pic= a single chip microcomputer with built in software. The item was advertised on Ebay and sounded quite good - designed for the Granada's EEC IV and the Teves ABS unit.

It is this one:-

Click 'The FCR' at the top of the page and read the pdf's there.

That is just a basic manual Star tester - a switch plus LED plus a plug. It will work with any EEC which is able to send a slow flash code, providing it has the correct plug to fit. The plug on this though, will not fit the Scorp.
