On many cars (including my Scorp and my ex-Granada) the number plate is partially hidden by the tow ball. I have never been pulled on it nor failed an MOT because of it. I suppose it depends upon how badly obscured it is. Solution for the MOT is to simply remove the ball, but be warned the bolts are extremely tight. If it is bad, could you perhaps get a (illegal) plate made up with character spacing such that it is not obscured? Any photos of the problem?
