Track rod adjustment. 91 Scorpio Cosworth

I’ve corrected slight steering wheel misalignment by adjusting track rods as per manual. Very successful and all seems well but a little concerned as the amount of thread left showing from locknuts on each side differ slightly by one eighth inch. Left side - seven eighths / Right side- one inch. Reluctant to change further as the car self corrects to straight steering with no tyre squeal. Does this sound OK? Many thanks in advance for any advice. Pete J

I've come across a problem before, where the right full lock differs from the left full lock due to the the track rod ends being differing lengths. I wonder if you have moved the whole thing one complete turn of the steering wheel the wrong way? Would the 1/8" account for a full turn on the steering wheel - probably not, so that leaves me with the thought that perhaps the sterring wheel has been turned a little way on the splines to square it up in the past. Another possibility is that the lengths of thread on the two ends might actually differ if one has been replaced. If you are still following me and it is not the latter..... You need to readjust the ends to get them both set the same ignoring the wheels offest, tracking done to finalise it, then take the wheel off and put it back on centralised.

Removing the steering wheel and repositioning by one spline will move it roughly 10 degrees , you would need to screw one track rod end a fair amount ( more than 1/8 inch anyway ) to bring the steering wheel back to the straight ahead position. Leave well alone is my advice, 2-3 mm difference between sides can be accounted for by tolerances during manufacture, a refitted steering rack or even slight impact damage.

Thanks for that. One last question please for my peace of mind. With one inch of thread showing from the lock nut. Is there still plenty of thread holding within the joint? Many thanks, Pete J
