2.9 ultima fuel consumption.

I ve had the car 5 weeks now and knew the fuel consumption   would be poor but the best I ve managed is 330 miles from a full tank  (about 21 miles per gall?)  and thats giving  the car a blast to the lake district  (160 miles round trip) and my 60 mile a day school run, mostly duel carriageway.  I live rurally so i dont spend much time in traffic.
The car seems to be running really well, responsive, no emissions and I m not thrashing it.

Anyone any ideas how I can improve the fuel consumption?

Hi, is it the 12v or the 24v?
I average around 25mpg overall with the 24v

incorrect tyre pressures, lack of servicing, heavy right foot, brakes binding, fuel tank leak could all be causes.

Do you work the mpg out by filling up, noting the milage then filling up again? If you use the trip computer it might not be accurate

Thanks Highlander. Its the 24v , I ve checked all of the above  other than servicing which is next on my list.  I seemed to gain slightly better result with ultimated unleaded but its not available in the village where I live so its difficult to switch totally.  I have been relying on the trip so I ll try noting the mileage.   Other than that I ll just have to stop feeding the family so I can feed the car!

Yep, they can be a bit dodgy sometimes with the readings

I've got a 24v with a higher ratio diff which runs 1000rpm higher than a standard 24v at the same speed, I average around 18-20 mpg with that and its driven fairly hard

I suppose it depends upon the roads you drive on, I can get 33mpg with the Cruise set at 60 on a long run but its too easy to put the foot down and spoil it Wink

I do a lot of open road driving so that helps. I do know if you stay at 80+ it eats the fuel at a hell of a rate

How many litres did you put in the tank after you had done the 330 mile trip?

A full tank is roughly 15 gallons from empty. If you put 14 gallons (4.5 litres less) in then the average is over 23mpg which is a bit more like it, and at that the fuel light would still have been on for a bit.

As said, get it serviced using the correct grade and type of oil. This improved my mpg by more than 10%, but the oil that came out was awful  Roll Eyes (I changed it as soon as I got the car!)

I m hopefully getting the servicing sorted for next week and I ll see what difference that makes.  All the fuel figures I read on the internet were higher than what its doing, but I guess theres the cars age to take into account and the fact that every now and then I cant resist putting my foot down to shock some snotty git who has nt a clue what I m actually driving.  Got accused of driving a 'old mans car'  last week!

I know, I've had the fat old man thing too, but I think they're jealous of my good looks and charm, I'm not fat nor old (not yet anyway Wink)

As for man, I'm not sure I have the money for the surgery necessary to dispute that...

As much as I loved my 2.3, the fuel consumption was umm...high for a glorified 2 litre. The computer used to tell me I was at 28 on the motorway but when I used to work it out I used to be at mid 20's at best - not just my car, I've heard of others with the same problem. I believe what's been said that you probably get the same economy out of the cosworth because you thrash it less on fast roads, higher rpm=more fuel usage

Was thinking about ways to get better economy out of a 100k engine though, would new o2 sensors and cats do the trick if I bought another Scorp?

Regards, Bruce.

never rely on the 'book' figures, manufacturers obtain those from rolling road and closed circuit testing and are not 'real world'.....

Hi mermaid, I have a 2.9 12v v6, they are juicey but unlike most cars I get the best milage diving below 50 mph, once above this I watch the fuel gadge drop very quickly, and yes, I love watching the silly boy racers faces in there snow ploughs when I give it some welly, makes my day haha. jim Grin
