lights coming on when ashtray is opened

On my 96 2.3 Est. i have noticed that if i open the ashtray the side lights come on, it must be a short somewhere because when i close it they go off. has anyone got any ideas?

Yes...the wiring to the cigar lighter is a known cause of electrical faults. You need to check it out for shorts etc.

Don't smoke ! not 4 the past 9 years was only cleaning the old girl went to put the ash tray back and the 'door open when lights are on' sounded pushed it in again and the lights went off, will look into the wiring

yes bang on the bulb that lights your ashtray has droped down and earthing on the surround ,you can get to it but its tricky ,,

thanks for that shaun i'll have a look at it tomorrow,if you know of anyone in need of a steering column and a radio/tape/cd sound 2000 please let me know person will have to collect i'm in Hemel Hempstead.
