towbar fitting(wot again)

tried to fit tow bar this morning, bumper came off no probs, removed no.plate lights and rev. sensors, tow bar came off my old granada(91) and looking at witter web site it is the same bar that fits the dec 98 scorpio ultima. i used the fitting guide that was kindly explained on this web site. back end fits as it should but the front fitting to the diff support is completely different as the one on my car. dec 98 cosworth ultima does not have a "u" shaped mounting bracket to fit the front mounting to,mine has a central bolt coming down from the chassis to a "T" piece with two bolts supporting the diff on big rubber mounts . looking up under the car i can see the four bolts that would hold the diff in place but they are doing nothing , there is nothing bolted to them . these bolts are totally inaccessable to the fitting supplied with the tow bar . is there another type of front mount or has my car got something different on it like a limited slip diff or summat(wouldn,t have thought so). any advice please

It's NOT the same towbar. The F59 does NOT fit the Scorpio. Neither does their F49+!! Witter got this wrong, and you aren't the first to find the problem. I emailed them about it when fitting mine, but they are still adamant that their bar fits......it doesn't!! I should know, I've got the fecking car!! I had a towbar from my old Granada 2.4i which I kept. No way would it fit my Scorpio, for exactly the reasons you state. We ended up picking up a proper bar off Ebay (Towsure brand new). You need a proper Scorpio Towbar unfortunately. maybe a member has one for sale, or is scrapping a car with one on?

Yes thats right and when I fitted mine I had to drop the diff slightly to get the fitting bolted in cos it's a bit tight up there.... Pete

| Mine was fitted when I bought it and freshly installed. It clamps either side of the main chassis members and somewhere in the centre, but completely lacks the centre bar which goes forward to the diff under the fuel tank. I rather fancy it is a Ford supplied and fitted one.

sounds similar to mine harry, fits either side on the chassis members with extra brackets and intriguing specialised bolts that go through 'splines' inside the chassis members, it also adds about 18 inches to the length of the bumper brackets and made removing the bumper an absolute nightmare when i replaced it last summer. looking at my scorps service history im inclined to think it was an extra fitted by ford as the first owner used the car for towing to spain and was very meticulous with servicing. neil, sorry, i was going to leave it off the car and give it to someone who can use it, but decided not too as it gives the flimsy bumper some added protection.......
