Blimey Jonny, all I remember is there's one size that used to fit the Capri and another that fits everything else...kind of a fumble and see approach

You forgotten about the happy times with your old 2.3 already Bruce ?.....I suppose you've got bigger things & more spark plugs to worry about nowadays I know what you mean about old plugs though....every socket set used to have a spark plug socket with a rubber ring inside it, so you could pull the plug out once it was undone....was it 21mm or 22mm for the pinto ?....can't remember I've not seen any 16mm sockets with rubber rings in them, so I just undo the plugs & pull them out with a pair of long nose pliers

JC, The 'DRAPER' catalogue has a number of these 'rubber insert' sockets and individual units all of which are very reasonably priced. They are listed by plug size. ie: The size of the plug thread.. A 10mm threaded plug requires a 16mm socket and a 14mm threaded plug a 21mm socket. Another method of removal is to push a piece of garden hose over the plug to lift it out and even better for replacing it as it ensures that you can start the thread without cross threading it as any resistance is easily identified.

I went to Halfords for a 16mm long socket for the plugs but for some reason they have almost every size except 16mm, both individually and in long socket sets. Where could I order one from? Thanks again.

Screwfix matey, you can get a whole set of sockets which also include the 16mm plug socket and a 21mm plug socket. Its on page 643 of the new catalogue price £34.99. Its a 32 piece kit order no 10235-84. I can recomend it as a first class set. The phone No is 0500 414141. HTH Ferret

Got both a 21 and 16mm plug socket in the set I bought from Halfords a couple of years back...problem with the rubber inserts is that they tend to come out with the plug if they get a bit greasy . Also, try Argos...some of the toolkits they sell are really good for the money if you're a DIYer on a budget . Don't get me started on Screwfix, they've been a lifesaver more than once, couldn't recommend them enough, could get into poverty just by looking through their tools section... 21mm in the Capri Jonny, the battle was in pulling the HT leads without breaking them. By the time I resurrect it though, it'll need more than a set of HT leads I guess . Yup, more plugs, filters and 8 litres of Magnatec now at every change but I'm happy . Regards, Bruce.

The remedy for loose rubber insert in the plug spanner is to coat it with silicone sealant, shove it back in place and leave for 24 hours.
