New Stereo Installation - Help!!! :'(
« on: May 6th, 2007, 1:34pm »

I've taken out my old stereo (2007 RDS) and I'm putting in a normal, non-Ford stereo.

The problem is that it's been a while since I've changed a stereo in a car and I can't see the speaker wires.
I've found a silver ribbon cable that went into the back of the stereo and I assume this then goes onto the factory fitted amplifier unit which will have the speaker wires going into one end and this ribbon cable going into the other?

If that's the case then can someone please tell me the location of this unit because I'm having problems tracing this ribbon cable (It goes through some plastic and I can't find where it ends up).

Thanks for your time  Wink

Thanks for the reply.

I saw this earlier but it doesn't show you what the amp looks like or EXACTLY how to get to it.

I was just hoping that someone was browsing who had done this before and could fill in the blanks.

seem to remember a while ago someone mentioning the amp is difficult to get too, i.e. you need 10 inch long fingers to reach through from the glove box, i think its seated near the pats module thingy.......

It's directly underneath the passenger airbag. If you take the 'wood' dash surround off, you can see it from the side. Not sure how easy it is to get to the connectors from there though.

There's an access flap above the glovebox which lets you at it apparently...

Hi,

To be honest its nigh impossible to get at unless you've got the dash out.  Apparantly it can be done, presumably if youve got small hands / fingers.

It is directly above the glovebox and beneath the passenger airbag, and as has been said, if you remove the glove box and inspection hatch above it you can just about see it.

There's some sort of fuse box in that area you're talking about, if I'm in the right place?

Anybody got any idea what this thing looks like so I know if I find it?

angel, keep the stereo you've got, but put in better rear speakers, 6 x 9 are great, but there's a bit of work involved making them fit. i've got a pair of 5 x 7 that fit directly into the original speaker units, being 300 watt (the ford original are 20 watt) they've made a hell of a difference.....

I think it's a bare aluminium box with heat-dissipating fins cast in.

Taliban, there's no way I'm keeping it in, I've got an in-car DVD player now  Grin

Or will have if I ever get the d**ned thing in  Cry

I'll be selling the amp, 2007 RDS, 6 disc changer, remote stork etc later if anyone's interested and has ideas of how much it's worth.

So this amp, am I right in thinking that it'll have the grey ribbon cable going in one end and the speaker connections in the other?
Size wise, is it like the size of a packet of cigarettes or much bigger?

Thanks for all your help so far  Cheesy

Hi,

It's much bigget than a fag packet,  Wink , about the size of two VHS videos stood on top of one another, and as was said it has heat dissiapating fins cast into it.  I dont think you will get it out without removing the dash, but as we have said earlier you can just about get at the speaker leads to splice into them.

Hi, I have just changed the 2007 RDS stereo unit cos my cd changer didnt work, all i did was cut the connector off the ribbon wires to the stereo unit, and joined the wires to the speaker wires on the standard cd player i replaced it with, this did involve some guess work, but it wasnt too complicated, the wires are very thin so the best way of stripping them is to burn the plastic coating off with a lighter, not very professional i know, but it worked for me. I will buy the stereo and disc changer off you if they work fine, dunno what they cost, but am willing to pay around £50. dont suppose you are anywhere near south wales? Andy
