Won't do any harm, but not really much use one todays more modern engines.

It's an upper cylinder lubricant.

See THIS for more info. Funny to get two posts on this stuff within a week though.

Dan, I use Redex in the Mondeo from time to time, it does a lot of local runs and sometimes develops a slight hot starting prob, a dose of Redex seems to cure this. Not sure whether it degrades with age but I doubt it'd do any harm, not sure if you'll notice any improvement though Wink.

i was under the impression that redex is a cleaner not a lubricant? hence the instructions for pouring it into the air intake to burn off carbon deposits.....

From the ORIGINAL post, this would appear to be some OLD redex which Dan's dad had kicking about.

Older redex was put into the petrol when filling up. In the old days (when a petrol pump attendant filled your car for you)....yes really  Grin  Grin You'd ask him for 4 gallons and a shot of redex. It all went into the tank. and as it went into the fuel system it kept everything all nice and clean and helped to stop carbon build up.

De-coking used to be a fact of life with older cars. You could start at 9am, whip the head off, clean up the piston crowns, re-seat all the valves, pop a new head gasket on, and still be in time for a pub lunch.

I know that there are some newer variations of redex, obviously these may have different uses/ ways of use. but in this case I think he means the old stuff.  Smiley

i havent bought redex for years, but i seem to remember 3 usage options on the bottle;

pour a little in when you fill up to clean the whole fuel system

rev the engine and pour some into the air intake to burn the carbon out causing clouds of black smoke (for an instant improvement)

warm engine, remove plugs and pour some down each plug hole, leave for 30 or so minutes, place clean rags into each hole then turn engine over to blow out redex etc then replace plugs....

Guys, I think we're talking about different products here. I'm talking about Redex fuel system/injector cleaner, the red liquid in the clear bottle you pour into the petrol tank after you fill up. Haven't tried it on the Jag because the injectors and fuel rail are a different type to the Fords (don't go there Undecided) but use it sometimes on the Mondeo and used it a few times on the Scorpio, both to help minor starting probs and it seemed to help...not sure if it was just coincidence.

Yeah. I agree.  The way I read it, it was some that his Dad had had Quote:
it looks about 5 to ten years old
and I'd agree that for that reason, that it's almost certainly the older stuff that you put in your tank.

Off to work now.  Cheesy
