Strange running

Hi Guys I have had my 2l Ultima for some monthes drives well starts ok, a bit slow, but has never failed to start, the guy I bought the car from said he had serviced it 4 monthes before I bought it. Done 100 mile trip today most on cruise control, but whether on cruise or not, I dont seem to be getting a smoothe ride, I can only describe it as, if it was a manual it is looking for a down shift, not as violant as this, but sort of chugging, I have tried dropping out of overdrive does not make any differance, I have cleaned the MAF, the air filter is like new,it is not a misfire, it seems ok when you are accelerating, but appears when cruising. any one have any thoughts on this, one other thing the speedo needle sticks a about 70mph, if I slow down to say 35-40 it then drops back, then works ok until I hit 70ish, then sticks again. Thanks Colin

You say it's not a misfire, but you sure ?.....Faulty coil packs can give these kind of symptoms

Hi Is there any way of checking these apart from changing them.

Might be worth pulling out your ECU (under the glovebox), and taking the plug off (10mm spanner needed). Check for moisture/ water on the pins, which can cause lumpy running. It's only a five minute job, but might be the problem following all the heavy rain we've been having. Water runs down the loom behind the battery into the ECU. Worth checking anyway.

Colin, pull the top cover on the engine and check the coilpack loom where it snakes around the back of the engine. This would give you similar symptoms to a dying coilpack, much cheaper to fix though and quite a common problem. Regards, Bruce.

Hi Thanks guys, I have checked the wiring round the back of the head, there has been a repair done at some time, it looks sound with crimped joints made.

The other possibility is that the cat is breaking up and partially blocking the exhaust. I have a similar problem just started with my cossie and I'm sure that's what the problem is. Does it clear if you turn the engine off and back on? HTH Thunderchild

Colin. Either the FPR is doing something silly and dropping fuel pressure (hence the hard starting too) or you have some kind of HT failure, be it the loom or coilpack. I've been chasing a slight miss (more like part throttle hesitation) on the Jag, gone through everything - TPS, ISCV, looms, fuel pump, fiters, MAFF, FPR and it's still there. Not all the time and then only slight but it's driving me mad getting it sorted - now it seems that this could be a coilpack, which is easier than pulling the tank for a new fuel pump . Problem is that as they age they look ok but they deteoriate inside, sitting over a hot engine for 10 years can't be easy Sticking speedo could be the VSS failing (located on the gearbox), this seems to have happened a lot lately, not sure if this could cause misfire symptoms but it's not expensive so worth changing. Regards, Bruce.
