Handbrake MOT failure

My '96 Ultima 2.3 Estate failed its MOT on Friday. It only failed on the handbrake. When i asked what was wrong, the mechanic replied "There isn't one!" Pulling the lever all the way up fails to engage the handbrake at all on one side, and barely registers on the other side. Despite that, the brakes in general are OK, and the handbrake cable is intact, so there must be something wrong with the mechanism(s) connecting the cable to the rear calipers. Anyone come across this before? I've booked it in for Thursday to see if they can sort it out, hopefully without it costing an arm and a leg.

It is a well known problem usually caused by the levers sticking on the calipers. Have a read of THIS and use the links on the side of the page to get the 'exploded' diagrams of the rear brakes. It may be possible to free off the levers with WD40. If you remove the calipers you will need a 'wind back' tool to get the piston back. The rears DO NOT just push back and the threaded system is there to take up the wear on the pads and thus keep the handbrake adjusted.

Yeah, a common fault, chances are the lever is gunged up and rusty, some have tried to remove and clean it up, but replacement is the best option.
