I have a problem with the cooling system with my Cossie it will run fine but when it gets to a certain point it just boils over, not overheat just the coolant shoots out the top of the header tank if i leave the top off. Is there anything i can try but i think it could be the thermostat stuck closed. Thanks in advance

Could be the stat. Can you see water being returned to the coolant tank when the engine is warm? Do the radiator and its hoses heat up? Coolant tank cap ok? Cooling fans working ok? Water pump?

The cooling fans are working fine, the tank cap seems ok i have had one on another car where the rubber seal had perished but this one looks good. I will check the RAD and hoses tomorrow and there is not leaks around the water pump area. I don't think the coolant is circulating so something in the system is blocking the flow. BAck in the winter we had a cold snap and my rad froze (on another car) and it gave the same symptoms.

Does your heater work ok? Most obvious one is the stat as you said or a blockage/dirt/rust in the radiator? although I've seen the internals of a water pump broken off. If you can see the water returning into the header tank then you might be looking at the gasket as Dave said. Dont know the exact cost but I'd guess it would be just under the value of your car depending on who does it. I think the cheapest gasket set on ebay at the moment is £75

no the water isn't making it back to the header tank so there is a blockage somewhere.

I had this problem on a V6 Sierra years back - turned out to be trapped air in the system and was a sod to get it out! In the end I think I ran it from cold with the cap off, and then stopped the engine once it had got hot enough to open the thermostat and get both pipes from the radiator nice and warm. Let it cool down, top it up and repeat. Eventually I could leave it idling when hot and it wouldn't boil over and the electric fans I had fitted cycled on and off to keep the temp in check. Darren P.S. Thermostat stuck closed would still register as overheating on the temp. gauge so I don't think it's that.

I forgot to mention that i did have a Jubilee clip come loose on a hose which may have introduced air into the system ! so fingers crossed, but i will not hold my breath.

I think I've had a similar problem for more than a year although the coolant does not appear to exactly squirt out. It get's very hot though at times and has to be topped up at regular intervals, no leaks are apparent so I reckon it's just escaping slowly via the overflow tube. I see no water circulating in the coolant tank at all at any time. Spark plugs show no sign of overheating of the engine supporting the normal temp gauge reading. Spark plug deposits indicate that the engine runs close to perfect.

| Could be that your water pump has deteriorated to a point where it's not pumping the water round very well. The vanes (blades) on the impeller could be almost corroded away, and that will be why it gets hot. I'd look out for a decent replacement pump, and you'll probably find that it will sort the problem out.

It's funny you mention this as i had a few weeks back a funny noise coming from the engine a bit like a rattle, but it went now thinking about it this started to happen around the same time. I have spotted a water pump on E-bay so i think i will replace the pump. Thanks for all your advice it's most appreciated i will update as and when i get it sorted.

Sorry to pester you again with my cooling system woes, i have noticed that the cooling fans are not cutting in, is there anything simple to check first? I have managed to source a new water pump and thermostat, just waiting for the weather to fit them
