Surface rust, ATF dipstick?

This is a 2.9 12v...

When I bought the car late in 2006, it had some surface rust on the autobox dipstick, so I cleaned it up with some wire wool and put it back in - thinking perhaps it might have been used on some short runs and condensation.

Several months later the upper end of the dip stick again has a surface coating of rust - is this normal?

It is using no engine oil, no ATF, no coolant. I know the coolant radiator has an ATF cooler inside it and might be one source for water in the ATF, but the coolant is as clean as a whistle - so I don't think they are mixing due to a leak.

The car is never usually taken out of the garage for a short run, so it always gets up to temperature everytime it is used.

Have you checked the funnel for any holes or splits ?

Also where the funnel joins onto the autobox, it is a sleeve fitting....may not be seated/sealed properly  Smiley

I have the 12v 2.9 too Harry.  The BEST of all the Scorpio's !!  Grin

Can't say I've had this problem. Defective coating would sound reasonable. Also possible that the stick may have been replaced with one that's been shot-blasted at some time.

Why not have it chromed if you're worried about it. Wouldn't cost too much I'm sure.  Wink

Harry, if you had water getting into the ATF fluid, I think you'd have known about it by now. Have you changed the ATF fluid? It's a decade old after all, might have some condensation on top.

Just a thought Undecided

Maybe someone in the past didn't push it all the way in leaving the top bit poking out a bit ?

Coating, what coating?

If it is really supposed to be coated, then that is probably the reason it is rusting - it is just plain, bare, quite small diameter steel, not much more than a thin wire really with (I think) a flat plastic end for the level.

The outer sleeve seems quite solidly located with no splits etc..

The fluid looks fine  perfectly clear, yellow, no smell, no mayo and the box performs faultlessly.

Yellow? Am I missing something? Shouldn't ALL trans fluid be pink? Undecided

If the box works ok then don't let it bother you, it's not normally hard to change ATF though, more a form of insurance than anything Smiley

Regards, Bruce.
