Hey mate, I wouldn't go there. The average car management system is quite finely tuned, IAT is nessecary to control ignition timing and other things, I wouldn't do it on my car to be honest.

Messing with the IAT which the ECU so carefully measures  spells trouble to me, I know air temp and density has an effect on engine power but I really don't think fooling it with what is just a packaged resistor is a good idea. Best way to get good MPG is to keep it serviced, make sure lambda sensors etc are in good order.

Just my £0.02.

Regards, Bruce Smiley.

The best way to improve economy is to convert to LPG.
the initial outlay is expensive, I paid £2000 but now I have a fortnightly fuel bill of £18 - £22 as opposed to £47 before the conversion. car runs a lot smoother as well.... Hull to Bristol £18.... not slowly either...

Products such as what you highlight are mostly of the gimmick type, if they worked everyone would be using them.

If you've got the space, mothball it and run around in a 1.1 Fiesta - that'll also make you appreciate it so much more when you do start using it again!

I know messing with the intake air temp on the XJ can cause power loss and misfire issues, I'd imagine using it on the Scorpio (at least the 24v) would risk the same thing. Manufacturers put £millions into developing management systems, I think if there was a fix that improved both power and economy, we'd have known about it by now Smiley. If you think it might make a difference then give it a go, just my opinion that it might cause bigger issues than the extra MPG gives you Undecided

What sort of MPG are you getting?

that would be ideal but at this time in my life i have no spare cash to just mothball it and get a wee runabout unfortunately.I love the car and if i could get a hold of a decent one with lpg i would snap it up,particularly an estate version, but i dont think they would be in my price range.

Tiberius, the wife says she is getting around 20-25 to the gallon which i think is ok but she thinks its awful as we are on a tight budget due to me becoming self employed and her studying.I have tried to tell her that the better the fuel economy the lesser the car  Shocked

Crikey. But then I was lucky to get 24 urban out of my 2.3, used to average about 20-22 urban, 24-26 motorways, 27 if I was lucky and on cruise...didn't drive it hard either. People say you get the same MPG out of the V6 Scorps, probably true. I get better mileage (25-30) out of the 4.0, loony.

Maybe lambda sensors or something? I've often thought this myself since I sold mine, maybe my 2.3 needed new sensors Undecided

Steady on now Mr Floppy Shocked

Problem with driving a Fiesta is that nobody has any respect and you get carved up like the Sunday roast...but being cramped in one all day in traffic does make you respect a better car Sad

The only 'admiring glances' I ever get are bemused ones from senior citizens who either think you've just nicked it or stare at you in horror as they struggle to maneuver their Metro past almost as if it was a Sherman tank Roll Eyes.

Or the chavs who stare gormlessly wondering why the hell a young chap is driving around in an old man's car Undecided

But hey, I'm the one with a car that costs less to insure than an Astra SRi and could leave any chavmobile choking in its exhaust trails should I choose Grin

In short, no it isn't cheap to run but pays for it in other ways, let it go and you'll regret it Smiley. You'll get b****r all if you sell it, will cost you more than you'll get for the Scorp just to get a £299 banger with tax/MOT....that's a few tanks of fuel Smiley

Just a thought; make sure your tyre pressures are high enough - mid thirties is a good starting point - check none of the brakes are sticking, and get an OBD scan done just to make sure the engine management doesn't have any (recorded) faults...

obd scan has been done and showed no obvious faults...however the remark about the brakes has got me thinking, also there is a drone from the passenger side when the car goes over 30mph(ish)i was thinking a bearing or something maybe needing replaced.

I have a 2.0L Ultima and get an average of 31mpg around town and 35+ on motorway. It used to be worse until I read on this site about cleaning the MAF sensor....wow, what a difference! I pressume you have tried this?
