Cracked Exhaust Mainfold

Hi there

Being to bored of using only the 2.3 as the 2.9 still doesn't work properly i decide to do a clutch overhaul. As for symptoms i had some strange bumping noises when changing gears, hard shifts in first 3 gears, and a rumbling noise around 80-110 Km/h when accelerating. Well i found out that the transmission broke it's support and the weight of the engine and box was resting on the drive shaft. To make mater worse the clutch was ok but the dual mass-flywheel is broken...and costs and arm and a leg. Anyway, i got used to this kind of "events". On this "rampage" to dismantle the car i found why in the last month the engine seem to get increasingly louder. Well yes it has a crack in the exhaust manifold. The mechanic that helps me (...yes...another one...not the mister know all about wreaking cossies ) wanted to took it of the engine and to get it weld in argon atmosphere. I rejected this because i'm afraid of breaking the engine screws.

And now to cut a long story short, i remember that someone on the forum used a kind of solution, glue, or epoxy resin and it held OK. I would like to know what to use.

Only advice I can give you is that cracked exhaust headers are common on the AJ16 Jag too, several guys on the forum (accross the pond) used 'exhaust sealer' to fix theirs and have have said it holds fine Smiley.

Hmmm, i'll raid some shops and see if i can find something. Actually i have found a product (on the net) from bison which contains "liquid" glass, bonds to metal and last up to 1000 degrees centigrade (at least that is what is written on it). Anyway so it can be glued not mandatory to be welded.

It may be able to take 1000 degrees C, but will it hold the pressure ?

As far as I know, the only way to repair an exhaust manifold is by welding it.....I could be wrong though  Undecided

I once repaired an exhaust manifold on a Cortina with a blow-torch & some cheap welding/braizing sticks from the local DIY store  Wink.....a good option if, like me, you don't know how to weld  Smiley

Welding is the way to go, if the car is for keeps! Someone had welded my
Cossies exhaust manifold before me and it has been just fine.

My experince with chemical metals etc. chemistry is that in a long run
they develop a leak. Then you're doing it again and again...

If the welder knows what his doing, it'll outlast the rest of
the car.

That is what i'm afraid of, a lot of mechanics and "specialists" in Romania generaly brake instead of repair.  Lips Sealed

OK fingers crossed. I bought a hi temperature sealant meant for usage in hot places, and it mentions exhausts on the cars...any part. They also mention to make a rap in fiber glass and a lot of substance to be used. I hope it will hold on...
