air lock? or hopefully not head gasket, if your heater works fine i would suggest head gasket, check your dipstick and expansion tank to see if oil or water is entering the system, will appear as an off white scum. fingers crossed.

Is the car actually overheating or is it just the light. I had this with my old td which normally ran with the temp gauge near the bottom then occasionally move up to halfway and the light would come on. One of the temp senders on the engine was u/s. Changed this and the car was fine. Just another possibility for you. Paul

Do the cooling fans both work when the temp gauge gets up to just over half way? They should cut in long before the temp warning light comes on. You may have a blocked radiator matrix - if you don't have aircon then feel for cold spots on the radiator. Wouldn't have thought it'd be head gasket if it's running fine otherwise, especially as you don't have any other symptoms. Another possibility is that the turbo boost pressure is too high, though this is more likely on 96> models which had electronic control of the turbo... Darren P.S. Don't forget that the sensor which operates the gauge is different to the one that flashes the light!
