Auto transmission fluid

Hi, I bought a secondhand auto box for my Scorpio, but don't know what year it is. I've heard that there are two different types of fluid use dependent on year. The fluid used on the later models seems to be rather expensive. Is there a way I can tell which fluid I should use, or does it not really matter? Cheers, Derek
