i've suggested this before but....

In a past life i was a member of an online gaming clan which had our own website etc much the same as this one..

The issue of paying for the server/bandwidth etc kept creeping up and the site would go down for a few days etc until the cash was raised and it was put back up.

What we did was actually show the running costs of the site and what was being donated towards the running costs every month.

People are reluctant to donate money into something that they cant see in case the site has £1000's in the pot Wink
ie until the site goes down everyone thinks things are fine so why bother just now.

IF you can see the site needs £30 or so for the next month you're more inclined to donate Wink

Hi Guys
I have been a Scorpio owner now for 10 months and as the regular " viewers" will know not all of that time has been smooth sailing.
However I have had support from many members and now have a car which touch wood is running and I also now have the dubious pleasure of calling a guy who runs cars on second hand vegetable oil a friend.

For the last 36 hours I have been lost without my daily fix of forum.

If you feel the same fling in a few quid . I just did (nice one Stuart)

Hi all at admin.   Smiley
You guys do such a great job with the running of the site and without it a lot of us would be absolutely lost. There is nowhere else we could go to to get such valuable help and also (more importantly)what would certain members do without the opportunity to wind poor old Simmo up?
 Few bob sent.
 Kind regards to all.   Smiley

In the past members have been asked to donate if they have received help. Whilst that is a sound idea I couldn't agree more with Alastairs' comments about making friends etc. Personally I have met a great bunch of people, had some fun and, hopefully, helped a few along the way either practically or on the 'Forum'.  It is difficult to quantify the pleasure one derives from using the site but for those of us who do so regularly surely the continuance of the forums has to be worth the cost of a couple of pints or a packet of cigarettes once a month to help with the running costs. Hopefully the loss of the site, even for a short while, was a 'wake up call' for all of us. Let's not let a great site go under but join with Stuart and Alastair in supporting it to the best of our individual and collective ability.  Sad Mike.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments and donations - every little bit really does help. There have been some offers for cheaper hosting etc - unfortunately the site is of such a size and complexity that I really don't want to think about trying to move it plus I at least have a good working relationship with the hosting company so that I can get things fixed if/when it's necessary - by no means the cheapest but probably one of the better and more reliable ones.

I'll look into Highlanders suggestion about having a 'count down' funds needed ticker or similar - I'd better start it at this months figures rather than money spent to date otherwise my wife is going to want to know why I spent so much on it over the last 7 years Smiley Anyway, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks all - you are a good bunch!

I can't agree more. Like most, funds aren't at their best at the moment, with a wedding looming, which I'm sure most appreciate the cost of such events. However, I'm more than willing to gather a few quid for the site, but I'm not 100% sure with the paypal thing. I can just about switch a computer on, let alone transfer funds. So if there is an E-mail address where I can Personally contact one of the admin to arrange a cheque/postal order to them, then that would be most appreiciated.

Thanks

Iput a posting in the news section to the same effect.
With a membership of 3000+, it seems incredible that funds cause Admin a problem when they do such a great job. If everyone just put £1 in as a one-off, it would pay the hosting fees for about the next 3 yrs if I've worked it out right.
Come on guys and gals - how about it?
PS. Yes, I HAVE put my money where my mouth is!  Smiley

I dont think there will be an active membership of 3000, the majority of these members will not be active anymore.

I'd bet the active membership is around a couple of hundred if that but even so that would be plenty  Grin
