Autobox bands adjust

Hi there, finally solved out the cossie engine but now i have another problem lurking. The autobox is acting strangely. When i'm accelerating evenly but firmly when it's almost ready to change starts to slip and then change. Some other times the box drops out of gear the engine revs and then the box selects a gear again...like doing a kickdown and the taking of the foot of the throttle. When the cossie had the timing chains replaced a part of the autobox oil was lost because of the radiator been taken of. I had topped out the oil but i thing i over toped it a bit. The oil was changed about 2 or 3 years ago along with the filter. Also before the timings where done it was working like a dream, perfect and smooth changes. I was thinking that maybe the brake bands need to be adjusted. I looked on the main site, found the manual, but they are using a special tool. Any suggestions or advices. In Romania it's almost impossible to fix an autobox.

Thanks  Smiley

Hi there,

Check that the speedometer is reading correctly as a v.s.s.  fault can also give you these and similar problems.

Good luck, Chris.

OK there are several articles on the forum with regards to adjusting the brake bands without the special tool  this is one here

I think the method will be the same for all the boxes

Hi

I was told by the autobox expert "Dave2302" that the band adjustment should
only take place after a box has been reconditioned  and it would not affect the
slipping of the clutches.

The clutches cannot be adjusted to my opinion, but the band adjustment should have
an effect  on how the gears engages, so  Huh

Dave2302 - is The Oracle on the autoboxes, I just haven't seen him in the forum lately,
which is sad. I sure could use his knowledge on the Granny's failing box. I refuse to
believe it is time for the recon for it, the problem appeared in such a way that I still
want another second opinion on it Grin.

Today I'm going to check the vacuum hoses of the box. I also found a relay next to
the distributor, it was loose (probably no ground) but did not have the time to
put it on properly... Will sort it out for sure. Now I'm babbling... sorry...
