Sat Nav.....which one?
« on: Nov 4th, 2007, 1:38am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

40th birthday looming & my wife asks me what I want ?

"I don't know"....."Sat Nav maybe ?"

Couldn't think of anything else, so a Sat Nav it's gonna be....not that I ever get lost....but it would be good to play about with & might actually come in handy every now & then  Smiley

Was looking at the Navman, but then changed my mind...maybe the Tom Tom,....hmm, but then the Garmin looks okay....can't make up my mind  Undecided

Now I'm confused  Huh

It's gotta be a budget model for under £150.....so any advice on the best to buy ?  Smiley

Hi Jc
I just got a Mio 550 Digi Walker PDA with Miomap v3 included for £300. Brilliant piece of kit, easy to use and fit in the car etc.
Also, because it is a P.D.A it can be used for other things too including surfing the net etc.
I have a Navman and have had many experiences of it taking you to the wrong places, up silly roads and telling you to turn into one way streets the wrong way etc, couldn't find half the places in Bristol and often led us up the garden path, which isn't such a problem until you have the caravan on the back. Angry

This thing now works without fault up to now although it maybe earydays yet we'll see but in the meantime it is being very usefull on a daily basis, even if it's only to pass time playing the games on it..... Cheesy

i have a navman f20, i think the missus paid £130 for it 18mths ago, works well, easy to use, and has fixed camera alerts. saved me from points on strange roads many a time. overall very good for the money.

Can't confirm this but have been told that sat-navs which show speed camera locations are actually illegal in France - heard about a guy who not only had his confiscated but was also fined heavily  Angry

There is also talk of devices giving advance warning of speed cameras being made illegal in UK too  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Currently considering the Road Angel 7000....Sat Nav with built in Speed Detector average cost £199, though there is the Road Angel 6000 which is the same unit but has a slightly slower CPU now selling around £150 mark or less.

=6000=

=7000=

this enables the dashboard to be tidied up saving having multiple gadgets on display and to set up!

Just to add to the debate I use a garmin seems to work well enough but does have a strange liking for minor roads. But I overcome that by only using it when I get near to the destination say with 15 miles of the place you want to get to . But has speed camera and POI 's which can me downloaded and appears to be user friendly ( It must be if I can use it ) standard kit in USA Hire cars so i understand .
I do think you need to go in somewhere and see the benifits and downfallss of teh various systems . Some make downloading the Camera locations a littel complicated others do it easily .

GOOD LUCK  BTW Happy 40th

Looks to be a bit hit & miss as to which one to go for as they all seem to have thier good & bad points  Smiley

Maybe a blindfold, a pin & an Argos catalogue may be the best way to decide  Wink..... Grin

Cheers for all the advice again guys  Wink

Bought the new Navman S30 a couple of days ago....why?....'cos it was cheap (£129.00) & cosmetically, it looked really good  Wink.....a bit shallow I know, but I really couldn't decide on which was the best budget model to buy, because they all seem to do the same. So it was a case of which looks the best  Wink

I've not regretted it though....it's a cracking little unit & does everything that is of expected of it & does everything that I expected it to do  Smiley

It picks up a signal no problem through the heated screen & is pin-point accurate to the door number  Cool

Plus, unlike the new TomTom V3, it has an SD card slot, so no problem sticking Euro maps in it  Smiley

And it's only 20mm thick, so goes in my inside jacket pocket nicely  Smiley

To sum it up....it suits my needs & it's just what I wanted, so I'm more than pleased with this Navman  Smiley
