STP or Wynes injector cleaner?

It just managed to scrape through the MOT on emissions, so which is the most effective tank additive for cleaning the injectors please?

I personally think they are all OK I use either .. whuichever is the cheaper and about twice a year.
I normally put it into 1/2 tank and run that nearly dry .
I must admit that the first time I used it it made a tremendous difference but since thhen no noticeable diference so either its no good or its all clean !

Thanks Snoopy. I bought a litre of STP for £7.90, enough for 4x tank fulls and added a 1/4 of that to a half tank - double the dosage. It does feel a bit livelier and the tick over is much steadier after only 20 miles this afternoon.
It wasn't a good time for the emissions test/MOT - the car had been just run in and out of my garage several times this week to make room for me to fit a new garage door, without ever getting up to temperature on the road.

I always just use plain old Redex in the Mondeo, did the same in the Scorpio but that used to get filled with Vmax most of the time. Mileage on the Mondeo started falling, changed the lambda and put a tonne of Redex in and it's back up to 35mpg now.
On the subject of cleaning dud injectors, I had the injectors cleaned on the XJ a couple of months ago, I sent them here.
Good service, I got them back in 48 hours Special Delivery, cost me around £85 altogether (but then there's 6 and the price varies depending on type, mine are side feed Lucas). They print a report with the before/after flow rates, 2 of mine were a couple of cc down but afterwards they're all back to spec. The only thing they don't do is a pulse test, sometimes the coil starts to break down and it causes a misfire when the injector pulses for a short time (like at idle or cruise), haven't found anyone yet who will pulse test them.

A mechanic friend of mine gave me some Valvoliene fuel system cleaner which i added to the tank with around 50ltrs of fuel & took it on a good motorway run at (ahem) MPH.The difference it made was amazing.However there is no substitute for a professional cleaning job.

harry, be careful of double doseage, a lot of additives make the plugs run hotter, i dont know what size plugs scorps have or the heat range they are (mines a diesel) but you might want to check them....

Following Taliban's warning about my over dosing the tank, I quickly topped it up to a full tank of fuel. My mgp in the 14 months I've owned the car had fallen steadily down to around 22mpg at motorway speeds. After adding the STP the mpg seemed to gradually improve (but difficult to be certain). Today, after using about 2/3rds of the STP dosed tank, I took it out for a bit of a drive after adding a bit more fuel. Both motorway and narrow country road mpg seem to have improved by about 6 to 8 mpg. A steady 80 mph cruise is producing a figure of about 29 to 31 mpg - which I think is very reasonable for a 2.9 12v engine. All figures were derived from the fuel computer. Very sujective, but the engine also seems quite a bit smoother both at tick over and at speed. I have no idea what it has done for the original problem - the exaust emisions, but I'm sure it will have sorted that out as well.
Too be honest I had thought such additives to the fuel tank would be nothing more than snake oil, but I'm quite impressed with the improvement in mpg. I'll now be adding some of this stuff everytime I notice a drop off in the mpg figures.

although they can vary from brand to brand they generally work quite well, i normally use them in the weeks leading up too that dreaded mot time. some years ago though i did as you were about too in a suzuki gsxr400, double doseage, being a race bred bike it had small plugs that were quite a high heat range....they all but melted, at around ten quid each i wasnt impressed

I always try to take the car for a quick blast up the motorway before the mot. This often does the trick, especially if you are doing a lot of short local runs. It also helps to get the cat up to temp too so that it's working at it's best.
I've used some of the additives in my Mums car after a narrow pass a couple of years ago and coupled with "The Italian Tune Up" !!! mentioned above, we've had good readings every time since

I habitually do take my vehicles for a good blast on route to the MOT, but this time it didn't help. I never use it for short runs, except in the week just before this MOT I was having to run it in and out of the garage whilst I sorted out a new garage door. Whether this caused its near failure I don't know - what I do know is that the returned mpg had gradually fallen and the STP seems to have sorted that out.

My dad's little Daewoo Matiz kept having the engine management light flashing away on the dashboard and the diddy 'ickle 3 cylinder engine was shaking violently with no power at all. We managed to isolate it to cylinder 1 because pulling off that plug lead made no difference whereas unplugging any other just about killed the engine. An OBD2 scan showed "multiple cylinder misfire" codes but that didn't really help so he took it to a garage and they said they thought it would be the coil pack.
Anyway, as coil packs are quite expensive, we thought we'd see if it were sparking right (which is was, I got shocked even wearing gloves!). As he's previously had an injector fail and replaced it himself, I suggested he might want to swap the injectors over and see if the problem stays with cylinder 1 or follows the injector that came from there. Interestingly, it followed the injector and number 1 cylinder was now working fine (so not compresion related then). He was about to buy another injector but I suggested we drop the duff one into my cheapo ultrasonic cleaner and fill that with Redex. Several 3-minute cycles later and he refitted the injector and reported that the engine had never ran so well!
He's since replaced the fuel filter because having had two injectors 'fail' we suspect it may have perforated and be letting crud into the fuel system and causing the injectors to fail.
Short answer is, if you can afford to take it off the road for a day and can beg/borrow/buy an ultrasonic cleaner and half a litre of injector cleaner then it is possible to make a dramatic difference.
