NEW MAF ?
« on: Jan 10th, 2008, 12:03am »

howdy folks, a little advice please. my old cossie has done 180,000 miles and still drives great. I have noticed though it takes about a second and a half to engage  D or R. also at low and moderate speeds the clutch seems to slip and she Rev's, and clunks into gear. the MAF has been cleaned 3 times with little or no improvement.
I have done a little reading on the site and I would guess this is my problem .
I am sure P0174     Bank 2 Fuel System too Lean (V6 models only)
and   P0175     Bank 2 Fuel System too Rich (V6 models only) both came up .

what could I expect to pay for a MAF ?

The gearbox oil is fine.

Many thanks, Dan.

Dan, could you not borrow one and swap it over before going down the replacement route?, particularly at that price !.  Wink Just found THIS on E-Bay but their details are on the site. The code number shown may not relate to the Cosworth MAF but worth a call I would suggest.  Wink

hi there

you need to make sure  it's for the 24v as it's bigger and bolts on. the 16v version uses clips.

hth

btw, the ebay one looks to be for a 16v engine.

That would seem to be the case Andrew as that number is on one that I have.

Are you sure it's the MAF that is causing the problem ?

The fault codes could indicate a faulty fuel pressure regulator, & be totally unrelated to the autobox problem that you have  Smiley

Could be the autobox solenoid is faulty ?  Undecided

its fairly easy to check the MAF assuming you have the obd vehicle explorer software from alex pepper..worth getting

at idle you should expect to see around .6-.8 volts rising up to around 2 volts at 2000 rpm approx

then it takes the guesswork out it...just a thought...john

If you pull the MAF, it should go into limp-home mode and revert to default values, if that doesn't improve/change the shifting problem, you can be pretty sure the MAF isn't the cause.

Exactly the symptoms I used to get with my autobox, 180k is a lot if it's on the original one Undecided

CHEERS AGAIN FOLKS, I unplugged the MAF , took her for a spin and the change was noticably more 'clunky'. when I plugged it back in and did the same run again it felt more smooth than before !

Hi  Smiley

If you get a 16v MAF or a 2.0 Mondeo you will find you can undo the tamper proof torx screws and fit it into the housing of the cossie one.  Its the guts bit that goes wrong not the housing, I beleive this applies to any of the Ford MAF's with the same plug / bolt pattern.

Did this to mine, runs and drives lovely and got rid of a few gremlins.

Regards Dave.

I have a MAF off a 2.9 but it's a different plug to the one on my 2.3 - don't know if the plug varied over the years.
