2.3l fuel economy

What mpg do you get from your 2.3 Scorpio? Parkers guide says 31mpg, although I have to say I've never got anywhere near that figure. Seems to be averaging about 26-27 under normal mixed driving. The performance is fine for me (I have a drift 200SX and a motorbike for my thrills), but when I'm towing the drift car the engine does struggle just a little more than I'd like, and I'm wondering whether the diesel would be a more suitable choice? I'd consider the Cosworth, but the autobox rules it out. Jeff

Fitting a higher ratio diff will help your towing but cut back a bit on your mpg

26mpg was the most I ever managed on a run, and I'm not heavy on the throttle either. The 2.3 is a very nice engine (very smooth, nice mid power band if you push it) and makes a very nicely balanced car. But 150bhp in a car which weighs best part of 1600kg, and that plus a trailer, go figure. If I had the time/space/money I'd have another but probably with a manual 'box this time. For towing a TD or 2.9 12v would be better, the 16/24v have more top end but less low end torque. Regards, Bruce.

My 2.3 hearse averages 27-28mpg,the coachbuilders change the gearbox to default in sport mode due I assume to the extra weight. We dont do all creeping around and it's not all urban. The vehicles with 2.9 12v engines do around 21-23mpg,but are so much more satisfying to drive with all that lovely torque through the range.

My 2.3 Auto estate is currently showing an average of 22.1mpg - that's over about 500 miles, mostly journeys of under 10 miles and quite a few trips of only a mile or so to the local supermarket. When the weather was warmer through the summer I was getting 23 ~ 24 mpg average but I guess that's because the engine warms up quicker. Best figure so far was 31.1mpg on a 70 mile trip to Wisley in Surrey back in May with 4 adults - including my 20 stone brother-in-law.

Thats pretty good going for a 2.3. Exactley the reason im now looking for a 16valve with a manual box.(Had a 2.0l auto & it was useless).Best i ever managed from my 12 valve was 29.6 at a steady 70 mph with the cruise control on over a 115 mile trip.Around town if im gentle i can get between 17-18 mpg but is usually around the 16 mark .Not much better than my old 3.9 range rover

I have a 2.3 Manual and I get about 26mpg out of that in mixed driving. Although I can get 32mpg driving 60mpg on a run. I had a 2.9 12v granada before (auto) and I much prefered driving that engine because of the low down torque, although I find the Scorpio a better car than the granada. I find the fuel consumption pretty much the same with both cars to be honest. I think I would choose a 2.9 12v scorpio next time for its combination of reliability and cheapness to put right. (some of the 24v repair bills seem unbeliveable!)

I have a 2.3 estate and average about 23/24 mixed driving. Just done trip to airport (140 mile) and got 31 mpg, not bad for a big car.
