After much investigation, my last dash hope is that the rainwater ingress to the driver's side underdash area is dripping through the rubber seal ( if one exists ) under the fuse box . This also may explain why the PATS red light is on all the time ! Can anyone, who has dismantled this fusebox, confirm there is such a seal or gasket, and how do you get at it ?

Yep there is a rubber seal under the fusebox, you need to remove the fusebox to get at it. four nuts hold the fusebox from underneath but you have to lie upside down in the drivers footwell to get to them

I managed to remove one(owing to my increasing aged condition)by putting a mirror and a lamp in the footwell and shoving a little(10mm I think it was) up to the nuts on an extension.I gave thought whilst doing it to the dental profession, and how they work backwards!
