engine oil light

hi my oil light flickers and stays on after engine running .its off when first started but after several minitsit stays on it had a ford fitted oil pressure switch fitted buy my local garage today but is still the same as it was before .they showed me the old switch they had removed.oil and filter changed 500 miles ago 15/40 semisynthec used.any ideas what else to look for ps level correct.thanks geoff 20i dohc 1995 ultima 16v

Have you had a pressure gauge onto it?Possibility of low oil pressure!

It might be the pressure switch itself has failed, or that the wire to the switch has an intermitant short to earth.

Could be sludge/deposits in the engine or oil pump..... As scorpio_man says, it should be 5W-30 oil Personally, I would start by flushing the oil out using a good engine flush (Wynns is pretty good) to get any sludge & deposits out of the engine oil ways & oil pump, & then refill with 5W-30 oil (semi-synthetic or fully synthetic).....& go from there

symptom could also be a worn oil pump or bearings but I would have thought you would have other symptoms if it was the bearings
