Try spraying all arount the coil and distributor with a silicone water rellant spray like WD 40 may just get to the places the air cannot.

   The engine loom is almost certainly degraded,and water ingress is the last straw.Your friend has made himself a nasty problem.There is a very slim chance that it MAY dry out,but a rewire or loom repair could be on the cards,new looms have long since been obsolete for the 12v.Sorry to be the harbinger of doom!
