If you are looking for a "more or less" direct replacement ,i can reccomend JBL's 6"x 4"speakers.They fit in the origional speaker housing & offer far superior clarity compared with the OE speakers.Bass repoduction is about the same.Got mine from E-bay £18 the pair

I think the bass would always be lacking in an estate as you dont have the boot acting as a bass radiator like we do in our saloons Wink Mind you, you dont have the cones blown out when the wife slams the boot lid closed.

Actually, one of the first things I did with my Scorp (saloon) was to change the speakers that Ford had supplied. I purchased a pair of Kenwood 6x9s (KFC-6956 - probably no longer sold), which are 4 ohm speakers, 140W and 2 way units (tweeter mounted on top of the main cone).

OK, not an easy job to remove the old speakers and retain the standard Ford parcel shelf covers, but I did it. I didn't really want to use the Kenwood covers as it may attract unwanted attention and I wanted to keep my car in the original appearance. I also retained the Ford rear-shelf tweeter units.

The sound improvement was incredible and made me decide there was no need for extra speakers or power amps. The bass is there and the speakers can handle it, as long as you fade +2 to the rear, otherwise the front speakers will distort. I did also replace the front speakers with Kenwood units but there really isn't that much room in the front to allow you to buy speakers that will make much of a difference. From memory, the front speakers are 10cm round type.

For the last 7 years I have used a portable mini-disk player, because the disks are far more robust and smaller than CDs, and the Ford boot CD unit has the bass heavilly clipped to match the original speakers they use. When I do occasionally play a CD, even now, the bass is considerably less than the mini-disk player. With the mini-disk player you can feel the bass as well.

Its well known that when driving a car, the road noise you hear often drowns out a large amount of bass from your stereo, so a system with strong bass is always required. I could go on....but I won't....Oooops...I think I did.
