Removing snapped spark plugs

I managed to snap a spark plug today and most of you know that it may mean having to take the head off and drill the plug out and re-thread the head. Thanks to one of these (sorry for the poor pic), which I hammered into the bottom part of the spark plug, I managed to gently unscrew it and remove it without damage to the threads.

Interesting looking tool - is it homemade ? If so, what from and what are the dimensions - may prove useful for others. If not homemade, where did you get it from ? Hope you didn't whack it in too far and damage the piston

I borrowed one from the local ship yard (my father works there), and modified it slightly with some duct tape so it wouldn't fall into the cylinder if it slipped. I believe it is 9mm across. It's basicly a cylindrical steel rod with grooves. I'm not sure what it's called in english, but it should be possible to buy a set of these in different sizes. Don't worry about the piston. You only push it in a couple of millimeters so the grooves get a hold on the spark plug
