Ignition woes

Hello

Not needing advice this time  Wink

I recently received a gift card from my FMD which I spent on a new set of HT leads.

After changing them the car developed a ignition fault:
Strong hesitation around 2500+ rpm and shaking/backfiring under load.
I was thinking it may have been a bad HT lead from my FMD, but I didn't find that very likely.

So.. I did some more digging around on the engine top.
First checking the wiring to the coil packs. It wasn't cracked, so I suspect that the previous owner has replaced it at some point.
The second thing I tried was pulling the HT leads one at a time, just to be able to rule them out. The engine started shaking, so the leads were probably ok.
Then I started pulling out the coil packs. What I found was one coil pack had physically broken in two places:
The long "stalk" going down to the spark plug, AND the connector to the coil pack wiring.

I tied the coil pack up with some strong tape, and the problems almost disappeared.

It seems like I disturbed the coil pack when I changed the HT leads, and that gave me an ignition fault.
I'm now currently looking for a coil pack to replace the faulty one.

So,

if your 16v (2.0 or 2.3) suddenly develops a huge lack of torque and begins to shake and/or backfire, and it's not the spark plugs, check your coil packs!

Oh, and if you have a set of good coil packs, drop me a pm  Smiley

Mine broke a bit further down and the insulation didn't crack, but otherwise it's the same  Smiley

In this category it worth mentioning that taking off the nice ford DOHC metal cap off - cools the coils pretty good and lets them live longer
