Thought I'd check the MAF a few days ago - the 2 wires were definately a bit dirty so I gave it a quick squirt with some carb cleaner - instantly bright and shiny wires ! Fuel economy has improved by about 10% Gear changes also smoother. 5 mins work and about £3 for a can of carb cleaner from Halfords - which is good for several more cleans - pretty good return I reckon for so little effort. With petrol prices being what they are at the moment I thought I'd pass this on.
