nope just a 13, 15 and 17 mm socket from memory, easy enough job, the steering rack is held on with a clamp arrangment with one bolt 'clamping' it, there 2 main bolts holding it to the subframe and then there one bolt that holds a plate wich holds the pipes in

undo the ball joints of the track rod ends and take them off from the wheel bubs (keeps the tracking in place)

you can then wangle the rack from out the drivers side

Have a read of THIS page and select steering rack. The Cosworth has 'sensotronic' steering so there is an electrical connection to the system.

Also, if you have a 'lump of metal' welded to the front of the cross member that prevents the rack from just dropping to the ground when it's all unbolted....then it may be an idea to angle grind this 'lump of metal' off before hand  Wink

It doesn't seem to serve any purpose apart from hindering the removal of the rack & later models don't have it  Smiley

Also, if you are planning to keep the track rod ends...... then loosen each nut that secures the track rod end into the hub & then fit another nut (the same size) on top & do it up tight to the old nut (making sure it is proud of the shaft). Then give a few hefty downward blows with a big hammer.

The track rod end will drop down & there won't be any damage to the thread caused by the hammer blows  Smiley

I always do it this way, even if the old ball joints are shot. This way I can keep the rubber boots intact, so they can be removed & saved for when I may need one  Wink....... Using a ball joint splitter (prong) rips the boots to shreads  Smiley

the bolt that holds the PAS pipes to the rack valve is 10mm...and jonnycab is right about that metal plate welded to the sub-frame,although i did manage to get the rack out of the daughters scrap ultima with the plate in place..there was not a plate on her 'p' reg estate when i swapped the racks over.she needs new gaiters though...other than that the rack swap went well. Simmo.
Forgive my former facetious remark, your reply to which was possibly very true !
If you have any problem obtaining rack gaiters I keep a pair in,supplied by local motor factors £9.34 inc VAT.I am sure you'll get some, but let me know if you dont.

I finally got around to changing the rack last weekend...Low and Behold when I get under the car.I find the rack is diffrent to the one from buyparts.co.uk Huh on speaking to them.."well thats the part thats listed, We'll arrange a refund". So I got onto fordparts.co.uk. Who took the chassis No. Only to reply. Unfortunatley,
It looks like from the options you have speed sensetive steering.

That rack is now No longer Avaliable through Ford.

I havbe just done a search on the obsolete system and there are none in the U.K. or Europe.

I have sent a picture incase its 1 of the internal parts gone that you can get.

Sorry we are unable to help with your enquiry.........

First question: Has anyone made a repair to one of these racks.

second question: Could I fit another rack without the speed senstive steering?

Third Question: Anyone know of a 24v breaking with speed sensitive steering.?
As ever any advice welcome. I am getting to think of buying another 24v and keeping this one for spares, I am using almost as much steering fluid as I am petrol Grin
