2.0  to 2.3 conversion
« on: Jun 3rd, 2008, 11:33am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I want to convert my 2.0 16v  auto  to a 2.3 16v auto .

I have done many other engine swaps in the past carbs to efi and efi to bigger efi etc so the heavy spanners part isnt a problem

I have a complete 2.3 estate which i am breaking so i have all the parts

my questions are

Do i need to swap full  engine looms or just ecu + pats modules  ?

Also i want to run the 2.3 with the 2.0 Inlet manifold  whats the best thing to with the VIS system  ?

thanks

You can also swap the estate rear brakes over to give you vented rears as if your car is a saloon it will have solid discs.

2.3 auto box has additional clutch plate(s) to the 2.0 to handle the extra power so you might want to swap the complete engine / box assembly over.

as scorpio man said it would be easier to swap the engine and auto box over

the 2.0 intake can be fitted, give the 2.3 lump a little bit more power as the 2.0 carb is 2x50mm butterflys instead of the 2.3's 60mm single

the 2.3 vis will be ok, the awkward part is finind somewhere to connect all the vacumme lines as there isnt as many connection ports on the 2.0 inake, it can be done though, ive done it my self

infact the 2.0 head will drop straigh on the 2.3's block, exhaust manifolds are the same

Thanks for the replys

I have to use the 2.0 autobox as the 2.3 only has 3rd & reverse hence cheap estate Grin

With the VIS unit does the flap open at High revs or does it close  ?

Nice idea but a lot of work I reckon. If you have the parts, it's not the mechanics as much as the wiring, not sure how much different they both are but I know you'll need the 2.3 loom as some parts are in different places and your original loom is probably toast.

Autobox from the 2.0 wouldn't last, if I had another 2.3 auto and had to keep it an auto I'd probably drop a 24v box in, wouldn't have another stock auto after the problems with my 2.3.

I've been toying with a similar idea not a million miles away, getting another 2.3 auto and dropping a manual box in. It is a better engine than the 2.0 and seems to have more extra power than the15bhp it shows on paper, up to you though whether you think all the work is worth it Smiley

the cossie box wont fit as the bell housing is diffrent being a v6, only way would be to strip the 2 boxes and fit the cossie bits into the 2.3 box

Someone a long time ago on here fitted a 24v box into a 2.3, so it is possible. Only 80nm difference in torque between the two engines, not sure how much that cut in torque would prolong the life of the box though.

Hi there

Just a quick note  Grin the 2.0, 2.3 and 2.9 24V A4LDE boxes are the same. Same clutches, same brake bands, and same production codes from Ford  Grin. Only difference it's the "bellhouseing" which holds the torque converter. To swap a box you need to take the converter out and change the housing  Grin

PS: Does the 2.3 ECU "knows" to flip on the VIS of the 2.0 intake ? It should be done by pin no. 44 of the controller, but i haven't had time to check.

That may be right

But searching by product codes / model / year, the thing that ford uses returns the same box for 2.0, 2.3, 2.9. Clutch packs also have a single code and are the same from the old '85 A4LD

The 24 V has 5 Brake bands in it the others do NOT and there are other differences as well . the BOxes for the three models are NOT all the same . the casing might be but the internals are NOT.
