newbie key fob help, now with added inlet manifold

Hi all,
My names Ed live in berkshire mechanic by trade run my own business restoring vinatge and classic cars, doing up a Rover P5b and the worlds rustiest Mustang for myself at the moment...

More to the point ust bought myself a pretty smart 97 Scorpio GhiaX estate as a family wagon, general workhorse, and a car to take us on a driving holiday this year to the south of spain via various bits of France...

Bought it on thursday and have already managed to immobilise with the dashbord in bits it in the entrance to my workshop as it had no dash lights at all (not much fun on the drive home in the dark).

Love the car but have a few questions hope someone here can help...

1) the car seems to wander a lot at high speed, I'm going to get the tracking done tomorrow but is there anything else problematic that is common to these cars/front end It went straight through an MOT on Wednesday so cant be much wrong with it.

2) i cant get the remote to work tried new batteries and replacing the contacts on the buttons with tin foil (well it was a late night afetr several beers idea) treid the 4 clicks on the key reset thing everytime aswell...

I phoned Ford when i ordered the dash bulbs and they wanted £104+vat so i didn't order one of them! my similarly aged Range Rover ones are cheaper than that!

so does anyone have any ideas on how to fix mine or has anyone got one or  two spare that I can buy of them?

(i assume i can just code them to my car)

Thanks in advance guys..

Hi & welcome to the site  Wink

Regarding the lack of dash lights....it could be a faulty headlamp switch......

Have a look at the fault finding page & scroll down to 'electrical concerns'  Smiley.....

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm

Regarding the wandering, could be worn wishbone bushes or ball joints, worn rack/track rod ends or could be just worn tyres. Again, the fault finding page has some info  Smiley

Hope this helps  Smiley

Ed.
Welcome to the world of the partially insane ! When you said that you had immobilised your Scorp, did you mean because of the lack of dashboard,? as I'm sure you will by now know that the key fob does not immobilise the engine, this is done by the Passive Anti Theft unit which recognises the key chip via a transmitter round the ignition lock.Forgive me if I am teaching granny to suck eggs !

Hi 10mpg and welcome. Did you get the familiar bong sound from the dash when trying to reprogram the remote?

Thanks for the welcome all, I only meant immobilised because the dash is in bits i could drive it but i really think i shouldn't......

Yes I did get the 'bong'  when i was tring to reprogramme the remote but still nothing,  I cleaned the contacts and fiddled with the gubbins inside the 'lil box all to no avail..

I'll have it up on the ramps later and have good prod about the suspension, if there is something badly worn the MOT station the seller used might be getting a visit from VOSA sometime soon.....

If it's a 2.3, then it is common for the manifold to crack around the t-stat housing. Unfortunately they aren't cheap. Ford are the only people that do them, there is no pattern part, & they are about £275  Sad

Unless you can get a good second hand one then you have two options....

1) Repair it with Quik Steel or WB Weld putty or similar.

2) Buy a 2.3 Galaxy manifold (identical, but doesn't use the T-stat housing section) & remove all the sensor etc fittings from the Scorp manifold & press them into the Galaxy manifold.

The following link/post may help  Smiley

JC.
Have'nt I read about someone converting to an aluminium 2 litre inlet manifold without too much trouble ? Perhaps that may help 10mpg if you happen to know of it.

yeah a quick search showed up this..

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=cars;action=disp lay;num=1210007243

which apparently has a metal manifold from a 2.0, does anyone know what i would need to do to fit this to mine, seems  like a much better idea that a daft plastic manifold...

Mine has obviously been repaired before so I am reluctant to do it again..

Would i be looking for a scorpio manifold? 2.0 8v I assume?

The 2.0 16V inlet manifold will fit the 2.3 16V as (as far as I am aware) they share the same cylinder head. There is a member on here called Matt who has done this. Apparently it is a bit difficult, but not impossible.

As far as I know, the manifold gasket is different & the vacuum pipe connections are not the same. The throttle is different (twin butterfly) & the air trunking, as said before, is also different. I haven't done the mod, so not entirely sure, but Matt may be along soon to tell you how he did it  Smiley
