Automatic gearbox problems

My gearbox sometimes rumbles when changing up from 1st to 2nd. Also when changing down from 2nd to 1st it seems to over rev and the car does not move before it thumps in and i go again. It is kind of dangerous as when you are crawling towards a round -about and notice it is clear I press the accelerator and the engine just revs and the car does not accelerate while another car has now made it onto the roundabout and heading right for you! I have taken it to a garage to run the diagnostic and he said there was nothing wrong. He suggested changing the oil and cleaning the filter, which he did but the problem is still there. Anyone else have this problem? It is a lovely car but what the f**k Ford were thinking with these autoboxes I don’t know. I have heard they are not very reliable and I am now experiencing first hand! Any help would be appreciated.

I think the oil level is ok. As for the MAF is that the little wire that glows hot and gets carboned up in the housin after the air filter box?

Yes, that's the MAF, although it's 2 little wires .....give it a good spray with some carb cleaner & see if it makes any difference Also, have you read the fault finder page..... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm
