Drive shafts

I have a problem on the rear offside of my 2.Oltr estate. There is a 'knocking' sound on taking up the drive and a 'clacking' sound when driving particularly when the weight comes off that side ie: when negotiating a roundabout. Also,now, the ABS lamp illuminates once you get above 10/15mph. I have checked and cleaned the rear sensors and the reading on them is 1.16. My thoughts are that the two problems are related. I see on E-Bay that there are a pair of driveshafts from a 2.9 Cosworth and I wondered if they would fit my estate?. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

Sounds more like a wheel bearing as the ABS is affected (to big an air gap between senasor and sensor ring).

Check the face of the ABS sensor if it’s concave then it’s been rubbing on the sensor ring, which can happen with a duff bearing – although of course sensor wear could have happened on a previous bearing failure.

hi mike
you can check the cv joint by jacking a side up and grabing the shaft. try twisting the shaft. if there's a lot of free play, try packing the cv with some more grease.
could also be the wheel bearing as posted earlier.
iirc, the 24v shafts are larger.

Dave/Andrew. Thanks for your prompt replies. The sensor is flat Dave and identical to the other,nearside, one. There is no movement in the wheel bearing as far as I can determine BUT in response to Andrews thoughts there is a fair bit of slack in the CV joint and it seems much 'looser' than the other one. Next step then is to pack some grease in and see if it makes a difference. At least that should tell me if it is the unit at fault. Watch this space.  Mike.

I'm local to you and have some spare driveshafts cluttering up my garage at the moment.
I've rebuilt CV joints on my MK2 Granada Estate in the distant past - not difficult to do and I think they are the same part on the Scorpio - in fact I have a tin box of CV joints somewhere in the garage too !

Beware of bolt sizes in the CV joints,the bigger engined cars have thicker bolts.

UPDATE. Thanks to Scorpio Mike, who turned up this morning at my house. the problem is resolved. Mike produced a CV joint which he promptly proceeded to fit having diagnosed the old one as 'well broken' !!.  . Whilst I was allowed to assist with things like cleaning up the bits the technical side was down to him. Thanks Mike. This is yet another example of the spirit which exists on this site and certainly is much in evidence with members of the 'Kent meet'.

Is it just sponges they allow to use now then . Nothing that requires " TORQUE!" to be applied ...!

Thanks Dave, I was at the breakers when you rang!!. In the process of sorting the CV we found the handbrake was u/s on the offside so I've been and aquired another caliper. About to try and clean and strip it.  Mike.
