I know that this the the scorpio forum but my brother needs some advice on an xr4x4 that he has just bought, is the CAT version so it has the hydraulic tappets in it, as the scorpios were made with this set up for longer i thought it best o as you guys. What he needs to know is, how noisy shoud these engine be, i know that they arnt the most refined engine, but it does sound quite tappety, it sounds just like a 1.3 popular escort that my nan used to have. Are all these engine like this or can they be quitened down, I have read that they still have the valve adjusters fitted to them, is there any way of checking that they havnt been touched, if they have is there a generic position that they can be put back to thanks in advance

The tappets on the Granada and 12v versions of the scorpio have HYDRAULIC tappets and should never need adjustments. You can adjust them and I think the settings are on the data pages on the main site , but others might know more. I do however recommend that he gives the engine a good flush and puts good semi synthetic oil and a new filter in it it might just quieten them down . They do sometimes get noisy on start up, but generally quiet, from my own experiences .

sierra20. The later 12v with hydraulic tappets is very quiet when all is well, however due to poor maintenance ie regular oil and filter changes, the tappets suffer oil starvation and the result is noise, sometimes almost diesel like ! Attempts at quietening them by using the existing adjusters is pointless, they need to be replaced which necessitates removing the heads on that engine. The amount of slack they take up is of course variable, therefore unless someone has wound the adjusters a long way in,the clearance will always be maintained. You could of course fit new lifters without prefilling them, put the heads and valve gear back and check each cylinder clearance on TDC to be sure.If you don't fancy striking it up with dry lifters(which many mechanics do),take the plugs out and crank it over for a while. If the engine is otherwise in good order, compressions, oil pressure etc,it is amazing what a difference new lifters make. GOZZ.

cheers gozz, how hard is it to replace the tappets, and reading the manual, is says that they need to be pumped in oil before fitting, is it necessary to do this, and is it possible to tell if the manual adjustment has alreay be fiddled with?

sierra20. As I said the heads on the 12v must come off to replace the tappets, they should really be primed before fitting, but it is not imperative, especially if you allow them to fill on the starter as I said, this will allow you to ensure a clearance exists. However if the adjusters are apparently roughly the same length above the rockers, then it is doubtful if anyone has been having a go.If some have been screwed down excessively then obviously someone has.I can't give you a precise measurement, but it should be fairly obvious.
