Occasionally engine stops.

I need to pick the brains of all you long term Scorpio people who have owned these cars long enough to have a fair knowledge of typical happenings peculiar to the breed ! One of my 2.3 engined cars, which incidentally had been little used for three years before my ownership, would cut out now and then whilst driving along. The most usual cause of this I have found is a failing TPS,a diagnostic was duly carried out,and indeed came up as faulty TPS,which was renewed. We  carried on ,confident that all was now well. This was not to be,as about two weeks later the fault was once again present, another diagnostic showed all clear,I replaced the fuel pump relay, this being another common let down, but to no avail. Now bearing in mind that lack of use is the greatest enemy, the engine loom was inspected and rebound, again to no avail,so do you dyed in the wool hardy people think that a thorough inspection of multiplugs particularly the biguns on the offside inner wing is de riguer,or what do you know ?
Any ideas would be very welcome.Incidentally the engine never fails to start again immediately  Roll Eyes

hi there

what do you mean, cutting out when driving along? are you talking about at lights or off throttle rolling?

EDIS loom, from the EDIS unit behind the drivers headlight.

Does it just die or stall? Aircon compressor siezing up??

To ye great Scots.
Thanks for your replies  Smiley The aforementioned cutting out has taken place with various drivers who report it as"just as if the ignition was switched off". I had it happen once whilst driving it myself, slowing down towards a roundabout, and when I applied the accelerator lo and behold,no engine.Slipped into neutral, and hey presto, started straight away.Must look at the EDIS loom Highlander,a good suggestion I think ! My problem is that I have operated 12v engines for years in both Granadas and Scorps, and tend to have a 12v mind Wink.
     Thanks again

I remember a long saga with a 2.3 with a dodgy wire on that loom, used to run perfectly then cut out after 20 mins or so and not restart for hours  Grin

How about the possibility that the fuel shut off switch is somehow cutting the power to the fuel pump without popping up....ie loose connection ?  Undecided....... Smiley

Could well be the EDIS as previously suggested. Does it start straight away after cutting out? Or do you have to wait for a few minutes before it will start again? If that is the case then that would suggest something electrical such as a relay or similar.

I have a spare Edis unit should you require one .

Thanks gents.
Snoopy,it ALWAYS starts again immediately, touch wood.In fact the passengers don't realise it's happened if we are quick into neutral. Thanks for the EDIS offer.
JC it could be something of that ilk, whatever it is it's only serious because like yours, people are paying to ride in it  Wink

Despite doing just about everything I can think of,this 2.3 still cuts out about twice a week but always starts straight up again.Today there has appeared a new happening, when it returned after it,s work,a sound very like fans running made itself apparent,a vibration could be felt on the top of the intake resonator, and when I removed the trunking from the venturi a howl like a single note saxaphone was emanating from the bypass hole.I assumed this to be caused by the idle air control valve, but substitution made no difference.I started and stopped the engine several times, and sometimes the noise was present and sometimes not.
I am sure that some of you stalwart 2.3 owners must have experienced this odd happening, and would appreciate your thoughts.

here's the photos of the mod he made for it....

Possibly something got in the manifold or a split in a vacuum hose acting like a reed.

Ref the stalling I had mine almost cut out a couple of times when pulling away – had to hit the brake as traffic was coming & the engine recovered. I was surprised to find a MAF code, there were no other symptoms the car was driving fine.
The diagnostic showed a permanently very low reading for the MAF. Changed the MAF & all was fine.

Thanks gents  Smiley Tompion,it does indeed sound just like a reed ! Regarding the engine stoppage, one of the many things I did was to change the MAF,in fact each time I do something the problem seems to be cured, only to return a few days later. Not to be beaten we will keep trying  Cool

Strange one that Gozz, so I'm gonna come up with a seemingly strange suggestion as to the reason. I might be completely wrong, but it's worth a shot.

Take a look at the circled part in the following pic of the Galaxy manifold that I bought a while back......

I've patched up 3 holes caused by the EGR pipe being fitted the wrong way 'round & getting extremely hot (EGR fault ?) & melting through the manifold. This manifold hasn't been fitted yet, so I don't know how the holes would have affected things, but pretty sure it would have affected the idle control valve & pressure within the manifold & probably caused all kinds of strange noises.

Could your manifold have done the same & this is what's causing the noise & engine to cut out ?  Undecided

It's a long shot, but worth having a good look, just to rule this out  Wink

Good luck  Smiley

hi there

another thing to check is the battery terminals, earths and the big connector to the ecu.

doesn't explain the strange intake noise, though.
