After reading THIS....I reckon I'll give 'em a go  Smiley

They're cheaper than the normal platinum ones & are supposed to last up to 60K miles....twice as long as the platinum tipped ones  Wink

hi there

some of the members of the Honda civic forum don't like them.

they were getting lumpy idle/miss-firing issues with them. remember that the civic has high reving, high bhp/low torque engines, so that might make a difference.

i looked at getting them a few years ago because of the 'bigger' spark, but only because i run on LPG.

ended up just getting the normal NGK ones.

Thanks for the advice Andy, but I'd already ordered them & got them through the post this morning  Wink

Got to give the Scorp an oil change etc next week, so will put them in then & see if I get any running problems  Smiley

Not a Scorpio spark plug issue but I recall when I had my Mk3 Escort XR3 Turbo - the standard Motorcraft plugs would last about 1000~1500 miles before they would start to break down and give misfires and lumpy running - only plugs I could ever get to work properly on that car were NGK. Similar experience with my Mk2 Granada 2.8i & Sierra XR4i - NGK were fine, anything else was a waste of money.

I've used both Motocraft platinum & NGK platinum plugs in the past & never had a problem with either of them, they both seem to last quite well.....just thought I'd give the Iridium ones a go & see what they're like  Smiley

To be honest, I'm not expecting anything spectacular to happen. I'm just kind of hoping that maybe they will improve the ecomony slightly  Undecided

With the amount of miles I do, it shouldn't take too long to see any improvement & be able to draw a comparison between the two types of plug  Smiley

Put the new Iridium plugs in yesterday (Saturday 10th) & all seems to be fine. The Scorp still ticks over fine & doesn't over rev at all.

Acceleration seems a little smoother & a tad faster, a bit like putting BP ultimate in the tank....could be just that they are new plugs though  Undecided..... although the old platinum plugs had only done 15K miles.

I've not done any real mileage yet, so couldn't say for sure if they are more economical or not, so fingers crossed  Wink

This is getting a bit like a diary  Roll Eyes

Anyway, 4 days since the Iridium plugs were fitted & about 300 miles & I must say, I'm very impressed with these plugs. The engine seems to be running better & smoother than it's ever done  Cheesy

It was a smooth car to drive before, but it now seems ultra smooth with a little more power. The autobox gear changes seem smoother & the mpg seems to have improved very slightly...probably by only a mile per gallon if that....but it's an improvement none the less  Wink

The kickdown is deffinately more responsive as well.....Feels like I've got an extra 10bhp or maybe more  Cheesy

It's as though the PCM has gradually got used to the improved spark & has adjusted the whole ignition system to run better  Smiley

I would defo recommend these plugs as an alternative to the standard plugs  Smiley

sorry its all psychological, iridium, platinum plugs ect are only produced to give longer life (better performance) simple physics, the spark follows the least line of resistance, the resistance is created by the spark plug gap, wider gap needs more kv to make the spark jump, worn plugs can cause misfire as the kv to fire is greater than the insulating value, the spark then leaks through the lead or insulation, V tip plugs dont produce a v shaped spark, multi tipped plugs dont produce a multi spark. up to a certain level your ign coil will produce the required kv to fire the plug. when LPG is used for fuel it may be advisable to reduce plug gaps a bit tro reduce misfire as the 'gas' needs a higher kv for the plug to fire (only an example)
so at the end of the day any new plug would give beneffits.

I drive this car everyday & have done 75,000 miles in the 3 years since I've had it, so I know if there is any change in drivability & there is deffinately a slight change for the better.

I always fit new plugs at around 20K due to the stop/start motoring that I do & yes, new plugs always make a difference, but I've never known the car to be as smooth as this after a change of plugs. Besides, the old plugs had only done 15K, so they were hardly shot to pieces.

Please don't try to patronise me by implying that it is all in my head or a figment of my imagination. I've been a member on this site for a while now & like to report if I've discovered something that is beneficial to the everyday running of my Scorpio. I'm not being paid to promote NGK iridium spark plugs & I dont write posts like this unless I'm satisfied that there has been an improvement.

sorry, in no way intended to upset you. but people can get drawn in to false claims, you have to objective with these things. In my 30 yrs in the m/trade, I have found NGK as one of the best, its the brand we allways use.

Had a hard time to find plugs of reasonable price when I got my scorp in Germany. So far driven only 4000km, but still I think the performance has been great. It took a lot of reaserch to verify conformity, but these are platinum tipped and cost me £30 for a set (ordered form UK ofcourse) Champion RC8PYP. And below is some more compatibility charts for this specific plug:

NGK Part Numbers: BKR6EP BKR6EP-11 BKR6EP-8 BKR7EVX PFR6B PFR6B-11 PFR6G-11 PFR6J-11 PFR6N-11 PFR6Q PFR7B PFR7G-11 PFR7M PFR7Q

Beru Part Numbers: 14FR-5DPUX      14FR-7KPUX

Bosch Part Numbers: F7DPER F7DPP222T FR7DPP+

Denso Part Number: PK20PRP8

Rover Part Number: NLP100190

Volvo Part Number: 917910

The previous were NGK though, and run for 60000km according to the service book. And they were changed in good working order.
Oh, the car is a 24V.

Martin....no hard feelings mate  Wink

I realise that alot of companies make false claims about their products in the hope that gullible people will part with their hard earned cash (fuel saver magnets & the Turbonator spring to mind). But I don't think a world wide renowned company like NGK really need to start lieing about their products.

To be honest, I really didn't think the iridium plugs were really gonna make any difference, but I thought I'd give 'em a go anyway & I'm glad I did. Most people may not notice the difference in running, especially if they don't use their car that often, but as I said before, I drive this car everyday & do alot of miles, so I can usually tell if there is even the slightest change in how the car is behaving/handling, & believe me, I have deffinately noticed a change  Smiley

P.S... found this about the NGK iridium plugs. It makes interesting reading..... HERE

Found this as well.....HERE

Also found this on youtube, which compares the firing of a standard plug to an iridium plug..... HERE

tlundkvi.....the NGK iridium plugs that I bought for my 2.3 were part number: BKR6EIX-11, which are a direct replacement for the NGK platinum plugs, part number: PFR6B-11 & Motorcraft platinum plugs, part number: AGPS22P1  Smiley

They should be good plugs as (I'm sure you know  Wink) Autolite produce Motorcraft plugs for Ford. So you are effectively buying Motorcraft iridium plugs  Smiley

I've used this seller before & also found them very fast  Smiley

Indirectly this should mean it's safe to use the platinum plugs intended for 24V on the 4-cylinder versions then.

having driven cabs for over thihty years i am always sceptical about some of these amazing claims if they are so remarkable why were they not fitted as standard at each service of my cabs (fiat multipla 307000 miles volkswagen carrevelle microbus 367000 miles 2x bedford rascal bambi motorcaravans both with over 120000 miles) ithink method of driving is biggest way to get best from any vechicle this is my opinion and not meant as a put down or critisism of any comments or personal feelings of previous post or memberd

Iridium plugs were originally designed for performance engines, & as far as I know they have only recently started producing them for normal cars.
Some new cars do actually come with iridium plugs fitted as standard now, so I would imagine in time, the use of these plugs will become more common  Smiley

Isn't your Multipla a diesel ?.....if so, it would have glow plugs  Wink

well, I have just fitted these in my cossie, the ones I took out look like the originals which have done 155000 miles, and along with a new air filter the tick over would appear to be better and on acceleration more responsive. The only thing I didn't quite understand was the amount of oil in the plug chambers - made a fair bit of blue smoke when I first started her up as obviously it drained into the cylinders with the plugs removed
