took cossie today for mot it failed on rear bearing and back brake pipe, garage gave me a price for the jobs £192.67 would u let garage do the jobs or are the jobs easy enough to do my self. im not to bad with mechanics.

A lot of money for one brake pipe and a rear wheel bearing IMHO the bearing kit is about £30 from memory and a brake pipe most likely less than that. It depends whether it needs a new hub .. IF it does the price of a new hub is £90+ so then it would be a good price, but they wont know until its stripped down.
A wheel bearing takes about 2hours taking your time . the last one I did on my car took me just over an hour....
Brakes take time to bleed and get right after stripping down.
In the end its your decision, but I know what I would do !

As Snoopy says,there is a great likelihood that the hub will be worn.It should be parallel and of equal diameter from end to end,the bearing inner tracks are a fairly tight interference fit on it,if they do not have this fit,a new hub is required.
The garage may say that they can use a special Loctite product to take up the slack,in which case you would need some degree of guarantee.

If the garage do the repairs I think they don't charge for a re-test which I think you may have to pay if you do the repairs yourself.
MOT is about £53 from memory so worth factoring that in too.

Hope I'm not replying too late but wanted to say a couple of things.
I had a brake pipe replaced on one of my old MK3's and it cost me the best part of £300. Since then I've thought about investing in a flaring kit but thus far have not done so. Kit costs about £50 and the pipe itself is no money but I think the hard part is forming the bends and joints right and at the end of the day if there's one thing I don't like messing with on a car its the brakes.
As far as MOT is concerned, yes its about £50 plus but if you leave the car there and have the work done, the retest is free. I think you also qualify for a free retest if you take it back within so many days. The key thing here is that depending on what it fails on, determines whether or not a full or partial retest is required.
I had my partner's Astra MOT'd at my local FMD last year and it failed on n/s headlight aim too low and unable to adjust. When I replaced it with one from a scrappy and took it back for the retest they failed it again for the offside headlamp!!!
They claimed that as it had failed on headlamps they had to retest both and now considered the offside to be a fail. I basically told them that they WERE going to pass it and they managed to wedge a screw inbetween the bodywork and light to get it through.
Sorry to waffle on but I also used to own a cavalier which I had tested at Kwik Fit, failed on rusty sills which I had replaced. Took it to a Hi-Q centre for another test (as I was paying again anyway) and they failed it again on a hole in the floor pan that kwik fit didnt even notice!
Wheel bearing kits go for about £30 on ebay and I work for an engineering firm that wholesales bearings and I can't beat that price (I've tried) but as mentioned, a new hub can really boost the price.
