Hi all, I wonder if some one out their can help advise.

I am on my third Scorpio/Granada and quite frankly would not drive another car even if I were given a brand new modern car.

Any way my problem, back in Oct 2008 I had a starting problem with my L reg Granada Scorpio v6 3l auto estate. I called out the AA and they diagnosed a sticky solenoid on my car (150000 miles) they towed my car to a nationwide auto centre (which are tied/recommended by the AA)

They installed an exchange? bosch starter unit which from day one did not sound feel like the old one? I had several problems with it but if left for a bit it would start. More recently the car would not start at all so I had to call out the AA again 2 weeks ago, they again diagnosed a starter problem, which would start if whacked and took me back to the same Nationwide auto centre, they got another starter in and fitted it but alas no starting you could here the solenoid click but no whirl of starter. The starter would work if they hit the solenoid?

The garage then started claiming that my flywheel was naf, to which I informed them was fine before there new starter was fitted, they are also claiming that other electrical problems are now present ie starter switch? Etc etc. I spoke to local ford garage and they recommend that I should have had a genuine ford part fitted in first place?

Nationwide have now said they will get a ford part and try that. I am concerned
1. That they have fitted a part not suitable for my car
2. The part they fitted may have caused more problems/damage to my car
3. I saw a young lad fit the third starter, I was a bit concerned with his fitting technique i.e. he did not removed my new battery cover held on with a hand tight nut, he spent a good 5 minutes bending my new battery cover about trying to get battery terminal back on? I did not see him clean any contacts/connection points, as I would have done.
4. They now inform me that if they fit the ford part I will have to repayHuhHuh
5. They have informed me that the starters they have previously tried they cannot send back to the motor factors?
6. They claim they have tried 2 bosch, 1 unipart 1 xl ? None work properly only when hit
I have recently had a brand new battery fitted.

On the third starter they fitted which only worked when they hit it when it was up on the ramp, as it was getting near there going home time they pushed my car outside, locked up and left me outside with a car that would not start. (I am a diabetic who some time back had serious car accident while I was stationary in a petrol station) I had to call out the AA again they said again after testing that the starter was naf,. The car has been with them now for over a week and I am car less and missing my baby my only pleasure left in my life was a drive in my car, which for a while takes my mind of my pain and discomfort from previous car accident.

What am I to do?

Thanks

Tony

this is what happens without correct diagnosis / testing, the fact they have 'hit' the new (s/ex) starters should ring alarm bells, have you paid with c/card, if so complain to card co. find a good reputable repair shop, dont let the animals near your car. there arent many items in a starter circuit, its a streight forward process of elimination. 4 naff starters, bet they could pick the 6 winning balls. this is why me in the motor trade get tarred with the same brush.

Tony.
This is an unbelievable happening, they must have a duff starter collection hidden away,as Martin states it's not rocket science. To infer that a Ford starter is any better than one not from Ford may be slightly true but personally I have never in all my years of repairing my fleet, fitted a super expensive Ford starter, furthermore my auto electrical supplier would be exceedingly upset if he thought he was supplying me with useless equipment. The Nationwide outfit MUST do the job to your satisfaction, were it I in your position, the place would be haunted and written protestations made, lots of em  Angry
        Good luck

Just to say thanks to those who helped with advice and to let you know what happened.

Nationwide claimed to have fitted 3 bosch , 1 xl ? And 1 unipart starter motors, none worked well all from time to time needed hitting with a hammer to get it working.
i went back to nationwide ( 3 times towed by the AA, who acutely recommend nationwide?) and insisted that they fit a ford starter motor, after some arguments, they wanted me to pay again, yer right,  they eventually got a genuine ford supplied starter motor, since fitting I have had no problems. It even sounds different when starting up, a more positive sound if you know what I mean.

Any way seems like my nightmare is over, I can not see how the AA can recommend nationwide, when you breakdown you have to trust the AA to do what is best for me the member, it cost enough, 4 call outs to them, 3 visits to garages to get help and advice, plus over thirty times I had to get under the car at traffic lights, round a bouts and busy road junctions when for some reason my car stalled and the new starter motors supplied by nationwide all failed( 5 starters in all plus the 6th fitted the ford now working fine)

thanks tony
