Is there a service interval for replacing the Distributor Cap and Rotor Arm on a 2.9 12V Scorpio?

I'm going through the service schedule and taken off the cap and arm. Not really sure how to tell if they need replacing. There is some silver/grey residue on both the tip of the Arm and also on the contact points inside the Cap.

Been quoted £19.36 and £8.72 +VAT by local Ford dealer for parts but don't want to change unless necessary.

Thanks.

hi tomp.
i change mine (mk3) every year...if the contact segments within the cap are pitted, and the rotor arm looks worn, change them..or if only for piece of mined, but i dont pay ford prices...i go to my local A1 MOTOR STORE....never had any problems with non ford parts anyway. Smiley.regards den. Smiley.
