rear wheel bearings

I am in the business of replacing my rear wheel bearings and have been looking at prices in different webshops here in sweden, and found one page that claims that it is the same bearing kit for scorpio from 85-98 . Somehow i dont think that is correct, or? regards M

no this is wrong. ive just sorted my bearing out last week and the mk4 uses a different bearing for pre august 1996 built cars

I think all the Scorpio bearings are the same,even the later Granada ones,but the hub nut is of a different type on the Scorpio and both sides are right hand thread,the Granada had left and right thus different kit numbers as quoted by Scorpio_Mike.Some Granada 3 kits came with two different handed nuts to do either side. i called the ford dealer, and according to them it was the same kit for scorpio 95-98. They had about the same price as other stores so i bought it from ford. This weekend i will see who is right Regards M

I finaly got my bearing kit and started replacing it, when i noticed that the hub is cracked, and i got ahold of a pair from a 2.5 td or a 2.0 ( have a 2.3). just have to make sure that they are the same , does anyone have a clue? Regards M

Hi Masse, I fitted a hub from a 2.9 12valve estate to my TD estate and it was identical so I'd assume it's the same across the range. Cheers Jim

The HUBS are the same across the range but I understand the bearing carrier is a little different on the 24 v but I cannot confirm this . ( Eric told me that one!) it is most certainly listed as a more expensive item , but being cynical that could just be a Ford ploy!

Thanks for all the reply's. I have had a second look at the hub, and it might be salvagable, have a co worker that will do some machining on the hub, shrink some new material onto it and machine it. Tomorrow i will see if i have to open the wallet Regards M

Isn't it the stub axle which is different That's where the CV joint fixes to and there are 2 different sizes. 100mm / 108mm I think.

Now when all the assembly of the bearings and seals are done ( helps to have a job with all the right tools) i have a question. After driving about 30km the rear hub is mellow, is that normal for a new bearing? if i drive twice the distance it's about the same temp. Regards M

Well now i have tried everything except one thing to get rid of my problem with the bearing. I disassembled the right rear wheel bearing again today and found them to be slightly worn (after 2 weeks ) So since i had one more kit i though i would try it one more time.. started to read up on everything atlest twice to be sure and then assembled it, tightened it to 270 nm. Still the same problem with the bearing heating up some. Now to my question, is there any difference in bearing thickness between the different years? (95-9 I noticed thta it was quite a distance between the inner bearing and the hub so thats my last hope.... Reagrds M

All the 95 on Scorpio bearings are the same,the bearing inner races are a firm interference fit on the hub and need to be pressed or drawn on,if they slip easily on to the hub,it is worn,as your hub had cracks in it then it's almost certainly scrap.When the hub retaining nut is tightened to 200 lbs/ft the inner races are automatically set to the correct running clearance,there is no adjustment available or required.New hub 6156880,thick end of £100. GOZZ.

IMHO what is prob going on is that yr carrier or hub has a wear problem created by a sh@gged bearing. Effectively when you torque the hub the bearing is going tight. I fit bearings all day long, (in auto transmissions), and I assure you the bearing tolerances are so critical you may as well consider them identical. Therefore my advice would be fit a new bearing with new /GSH Hub and New /GSH carrier, that way when you torque it it will all be spot on and no more problems. I've had 2 Scorps with naffed bearings and you dont know there gone until they are totally sh@gged and then you need to replace hub and carrier 9 times out of 10. As you will of course know,as long as the bearing outer races press into the hub carrier OK,and the spacer in the casting is not damaged,then the carrier is reusable.The hub always goes first and is seldom reusable,and if left too long will destroy the carrier as well. I am 99% sure that i have found the problem, either the hub is short ot the new bearings a bit thicker. When the bearings are mounted the distance bewteen the outer rim of the bearing and the hub shaft is 1.8mm ( the bearing is outside the hub) I think thats a bit much, so i put shims til i hade 0.3mm distance, and it seems to be working fine. When i measured the old bearings they are about 0.1mm thinner at the base. Hope my work with this is over now, thanx for all the help so far Regards M
