Hi, What would be the best approach to rustproof a new fuel tank? Is it just rustproofing base paint + some layers of rustproofing coating (sorry for the bad terminology)? Or is either treatment on its own good enough?

tlundkvi. I always hang mine up by the corner in the garage, and after blanking off the orifices and tubes give it a good thick spray with underseal, that will last the rest of the car's life. GOZZ.

Another way of perpetuating the life of a fuel tank is to paint it with Laminating Resin as used in fibreglass laminating, strip the paint off first to be shure it adheres to the steel. It'll live forever and a day.... Old trick we used to do back in 70's when we used to custom make fuel tanks. Hth Pete

| Very clever, indeed. If you can make boats with it, then why not coating with it

my personal method is to key the surface treat with several coats of galvanising paint (Galvafroid) and then allow to dry for several days. Then finish with several coats of hammer finish paint - i've recovered really rusty old hulks this way and they're still as good to this day as they went in
