While I was driving to work this morning the battery light was flashing rapidly on/off for the first couple of miles, does this indicate the alternator is on the way or should I be just looking for a loose connection or something like that ??

battery light being is usually a low voltage battery with is most probably caused by the alternator failing, the fact that it is flashing on and off could mean that you have a dodgy connection on the alternator, try disconnecting the leads going to the alternator and cleaning them up and see if that makes a differance.
