When i fitted mine, i took the front lenses off the car and did everything in situ. The ballast units were fitted behind the lamp units where there is more room and they are less likely to get damaged or wet! It took about 2 or 3 hours to do everything and looked pretty good at the end

its easlier if you take the whole lamp out as you need to get the front glass lense off to do it

| As with most things, it's open to debate. The sticking point is not the light itself but the self leveling mechanism (or lack of when retro-fitted). Myself - my old car always went through MOT's no probs with HID fitted. A friends car failed on the HID's - took it to a different garagae - they passed it.

| Not really. There are three main points:- Anything that isn't white SHOULD fail You need self levelers You need headlamp washers. It's all open to interpretation. I'm firnedly with my MOT center and they don't see any issues with them as long as they are the right colour, the headlamps are clean when they test the car and the beam pattern is correct. Other MOT tester however don't like them. Quote:so it's basically better not to mess with it... |
| Have a chat with the chap that does your MOT's for his opinion. For what it's worth, I know many more cars with aftermarket kits that pass rather than fail.

| + the headlight needs to be approved to be used in conjunction with HID bulbs (however problems are less likely with projector lens lights). Some say that HID bulbs are not too good with reflector lights. The reason why they pass: MOT is carried out by humans and is subjective. Some technicians pay more attention to dangerous cars with bad brakes etc. than §§§. BUT, to have mounted ballasts in the hood is not illegal. Just use the aftermarket HID 364 days/year and the halogens on MOT-day.

i went to the garage today to check the progress on my car and as they also run an MOT station i asked them about those conversion kits and i've been told that they are 1000% road legal as long as they are about 6000 Kelvins above that they are to bright and below they don't exactly give the white light... so i'll be buying a 6000K conversion kit soon

| You just take them off on MOT Day, or disconnect it and put the standard bulb in. They can't fail because ballasts are mounted but not in use. If you get stopped by the police, you can say you were assured they were legal.

I put hids in about 12 months ago and it passed the mot with no problems, I used the 6000k and just replaced them in place, not to hard. The only down side is I get flashed a bit unless I point them down a bit.
